    Thanks Jerry....the springs were all the same length, dry, clean, and not discolored. AFAIK...this is the original starter....still has the Chrysler/Prestolite sticker on it. Included a couple of pics.

    First time tearing into a starter.....wanted to check condition of the internals, especially the brushes....and to see how dirty it was inside. Other than some carbon dust it looked pretty good. Need an opinion on condition of the brushes in attached photo. Look ok? Need replacing? Thanks.

    Update.....got the new bolts installed, bled the system.....motor STILL bled down about a third of the way, then stopped solid. Would not stay fully up. Decided this was not a seal problem or it would go all the way down, like it did before I replaced the VB. Got to thinking I must have...

Pretty sure my Auto policy covers it while towing, but need to verify that too. I will be calling my agent...

    That flat rectangular plate is the exhaust port cover. Look for a small oval shaped cover near the bottom left corner of that cover that has 2 small bolts holding it on. If you have one, the poppet or "relief" valve is inside. It only works at high rpm's for pressure relief, so don't think it...

    Thanks for that Nordin.....I have done several comp checks and each time I put the hose/muffs on just in case because I wasn't sure. The manual didn't say anything about it so was wandering how the experts on here do it. (y)
