    Prop selection help

Those Numbers don't add up. A 15" turns 6150 rpm and gave 25mph. Then you say a 13" turned 5800 rpm and gave 31 mph. A lower Pitch Prop, spinning slower doesn't give higher Mph. Even the Numbers for the 16" don't follow the usual pattern.

That case has been apart before, as OMC used a Hardening Sealer along with the Spaghetti Seal from the Factory. Sealer 1000 was that type of Sealer, but that was back in the 60s The sticky Brown stuff is pretty much the Same Stuff and Edelbrock's 'Gask-a-Cinch', or Mercury Perfect Seal.

Based on the Cowl and Faceplate Decals, I'm almost 100% certain it is a 73 A 73 has Mercury Marine on the Face Plate, a 72 would have Kiekhaefer Mercury In 74 the two blue stripes would have not gone under the Face Plate. Granted, this is my 1984 115, kinda looks like a 71, cause I put the 71...

    Surging Mercury (with audio)

Have you had the Carbs off? If you did, after putting them back on, did you do what is called a Link and Sync? That is making sure all the Carbs are fully closed at Idle, and all are properly synced in regards to the Spark Advance.

Welcome to iboats A Serial # can provide a guide to finding out what year. For Decades, Mercury sorted it Parts and Service Info, based on the Serial #, not on the Model Yr. This was their way of Dealing with Changes/Improvements to the Engine, without many Addendums to the Lists/Manuals

    Upgrading mercury outboard help!

Mercury did make a few different 150s in that Era, and one was an Opti. You say there are no Merc Dealers near you, did you check Merc's website, for one? Your "Friend" didn't mention that you were getting only the Motor, no Harness or Controls?

    Johnson 35 Lower unit swap

I Highly doubt you are going to get a Gear Case from a 78 35 hp to work on an 81 35hp. Shift Linkages are Different. The 78 disconnects up in the Exhaust Housing, while the 81 disconnects in the Gear Housing, between the Water Inlet Screens

    Low compression - 1986 Mercury classic 50

Lots of things can the reason it takes longer to restart when warm. Fuel Percolating out of the carbs, can create an overly rich mix getting to the Combustion Chamber, which can make starting take longer. But first, is it cranking Slower when out on the water, versus being on the Muffs, and out...

    Low compression - 1986 Mercury classic 50

Welcome to iboats It doesn't sound all that Bad, however, running on the Muffs, really does tell anyone much, as it could be running on 2 cylinders, as there is no Backpressure, not being in the water, at Docked/anchoured Depth. Running tilted like that also creates its own problems as the Fuel...

Fogging is the Term used for Spraying a quantity of Storage Oil into the Carbs, to coat the Rotating Assembly, protecting it from Corrosion during longer term Storage. Doing it, results in a Fog of Smoke. Applying Power Tune via the Plug Holes is done when the Piston Rings are badly Carboned...

    What oil should I use?

GM used to, maybe still does, market an Oil Supplement, aptly called Engine Oil Supplement(EOS) which they recommended during Break In. I recall the printing on the Can, saying it was good for Cam Break In. It was a delightful Chemical Stew, that while Thicker than Oil, it was runny compared to...

    What oil should I use?

Poppycock. I switched, from Dino Oil to Synthetic on an Engine with 110,000 miles on it, and it didn't leak, or burn it any faster. It now has over 250,000 miles on it and still No Difference.

    towing - engine in neutral?

I remember doing the Multiple Guess Test a few Decades ago. A lot of it was about Harbour Lights, Channel Markings, and those Floating Things. None of those are used out in the Land of the Right Wingnuts(Alberta)

    towing - engine in neutral?

Bunk Trailers are the Reason, as the friction is too high to winch on. Backing in Deeper, results in ruined Diffs and boat that aren't centered on the Trailer. Roller Trailers, work well with winches but not power loading.
