I'm on vacation, and yesterday spun the hub on the prop on my 58 10HP Evinrude. I was able to get up and going again by pulling the prop from my "spare" motor, a 64 Johnson 9.5. But, while I'm waiting for the wind to go back down so I can go fishing once more, I'm investigating my options for a...
While on a fishing trip to the St. Lawrence River last week, we discovered that the shift follower assembly had broken. This meant that sometimes it would shift into forward, but more often not. No idea when it happened, sometime in storage, I guess. Not having any other acceptable resources at...
This is a photo of my boats docked at a fishing camp on the St. Lawrence River. The motor on the left is a '56 15HP Johnson, and the one on the right is a '58 10HP Evinrude. What strikes me is that to look at them, they look to be the same size. Did OMC use the same basic cowl for both sizes...
At a guess, all other things being equal (same boat, trim, load, etc.), which would likely be faster, a '54 10HP Johnson with a replacement 9x7 prop, or a '58 Evinrude 10HP with the original 8.25x8 prop?
Just curious...
I have a '64 9.5 Johnson that I've owned since 1985. I was just doing my annual Inspection of the Points in anticipation of our annual fishing trip, when it struck me that in all that time I've never replaced the coils. I knew the original owner, dead now, and it's doubtful he ever did it, so...
I have a '64 9.5 Johnson that needs new pads on the steering friction. I have the pads.
Is there a way to replace those pads without splitting open the clamshell and removing half of it? I've done that job before, more than once, and it's no fun. Have to admit, it doesn't look like there's any...
I knew I needed a new clutch dog for my 1954 10HP Johnson, so a couple of months ago I looked up the part and ordered one on eBay. It was NOS (New Old Stock), in the box. I looked at it when it got here, and it looked right, so I thought nothing of it.
I couldn't get to install it until a few...
As detailed in another thread, I picked up a 1958 Sportwin at a garage sale a while back. I've done some work on it, and hope to get a chance to check it out on a boat soon. Assuming it's OK, I'll probably want to convert it to a single hose tank eventually. I have but one dual hose tank, and...
I stumbled across this at a garage sale yesterday, and just couldn't pass it up. It's an Evinrude Sportwin 10hp. The model number is 10016, making it a 58 model. It's in decent condition, and looks generally well cared-for, but there are a few problems. The seller wasn't the user, but had...
For those who have wanted to know, and YOU know who you are, it appears that a gearcase from a 1958 Montgomery Ward Sea King 12HP will fit on a 1954 Johnson 10HP outboard.
I had some water get into the gearcase of the 10 and the driveshaft and the bearing it runs on were slightly scored. I had...
My brother and I take a fishing vacation on the St. Lawrence River each year. We take two 14-ft aluminum boats with 10-15 hp outboards and range about 3 miles up and down river from the fishing camp, so we could be as much as 6 miles apart but most of the time would be closer to each other than...
OK, once and for all, what's the real story here? I own three Johnsons, a '64 9.5HP, a '54 10HP, and a '56 15HP. The 9.5 came over 25 years ago with the owner's manual, so I know the mixture is supposed to be 50:1. I don't have that advantage with the other two. The decal is present on the 10...
Been looking for one, and they seem to be very hard to find. If there's a Sierra kit for it, I don't know what the number is. I did find one at vintageoutboard.com, but I'd like to do some comparison shopping before I buy. I'd even consider individual components, but I expect that would be more...
Mostly curious... On a 50's 10-15 hp Johnnyrude motor, all other things being equal, how much speed is sacrificed going from a standard to a weedless prop? 10%? 15% 20%? 25%?
I have a '56 15hp johnson that was given to me a couple of years ago. I thought I had it ready to go, but found that it needed a new clutch dog to stay in gear, and I also replaced the gearset with one from a '58 Gale-made 12hp Sea King.
Now I have three props to use on this motor. It came with...
I'm looking for a part number for this kit, either Sierra or OMC. I can't seem to find one anywhere for anything older than 1958, and I heard they changed something around then. I also could use the part number for a lower unit kit for a Johnson QD-15, which I suspect may be the same kit but...
I posted a question a few days ago, which was answered (Thanks!), about the possibility of replacing the gears of my '56 15hp Johnson with those of a 12hp Gale-made Sea King of around the same age. The answer was that the gears could probably be swapped as a set, but not necessarily as...
Just got back this afternoon from a week's fishing on the St. Lawrence, so I haven't had a chance to tear things apart for inspection yet. However, my newly-resurrected '56 15 hp Johnson showed all the signs of a worn clutch dog/forward gear problem on its first river test run on my 14ft...
I have a Johnson outboard, and the plate says its model number is FD-10 L. I know that it means that it is a 1956 15-horse, but what does the "L" designate?
It's not "Long" as, well, it isn't "long." Could it be "Left?" "Lucky?" "Lightning-fast?" "Long-lasting?"
I recently wrote about a repair to the transom of an old 14ft. aluminum boat, and wondered if a hydrofoil would reduce the strain from the '56 15hp Johnson I want to put on it. Well, it doesn't matter any more, as I have made a decision about the hydrofoil.
I need it. I need something, anyway -...
