I just put a new lower unit on my 2000 40hp Merc. I started it at home with ear muffs and put in forward and reverse gear and get a little growling kinda noise.(hard to describe) But when I give it throttle it goes away in both forward and reverse.
When installing, every thing seem to fit fine...
Im looking for a good 40hp lower unit and drive shaft. Do I need the same year lower unit or will other year 40hp lower units work? You can find some and they say they will fit? Not sure does anyone know?

Is it hard to replace/rebuild lower unit your self. I chipped one of the inner gears and broke the main shaft to the crankcase. I got the broken piece out of the crank case. Ive heard that shimming the drive gears back can be tricky. Is this the only tricky part to doing this, is there any...
