    Gleamin' the toons

I just purchased an '87 or so 20' Sun tracker Bass Buggy. Not too bad shape - should be able to switch motors and get it on the water pretty fast. Since I have all this energy, I would like to try and shine up the tubes. Not very much 'water line' stuff p probably pretty scrubable. I thought...

    Lifting a motor

Is there a "hook" or other lifting device available to hoist an engine? Specifically, I want to hoist a 1985(?) Merc. 60 hp. There seems to be a large internal thread in the center of the flywheel that looks like it might accommodate such an animal, but without checking first, I don't want to...

    Changing boats - changing props?

I currently have a 1985 35 hp Merc on a 14' aluminum v hull boat. I would like to put this motor on a 1985 Bass Buggy pontoon (18'). (No, I cannot afford a new 50hp). My question is, do I need to change to a different prop for the pontoon? If so, what might be a good diameter/pitch?

    1985 35 hp Merc - price?

I have a friend who would like to sell me a 1985 35 hp merc. Have not seen it yet, but he reports it to be in good condition and maintained. Neither of us have any idea how much a motor like this should cost. Can you help? Ken

Electric starter question 55hp Rude 1968

Evinrude 55 hp 1968 model# 55872R The lower half of some of the teeth on my flywheel ring gear are gnawed off. The "upper" portion of the teeth are in good shape. Before I go looking for a whole brand new flywheel (haven't found one new or used yet), it occurs to me to ask if there is...

    Carb rebuild kits

I will be rebuilding the carbs soon on my '68 55 hp Rude. I have noticed pretty good prices on Sierra kits. Are they any good, or should I get something different? And do the kits come with instructions or should I just plough through my service manual?

'68/'69 55 hp Rude flywheel interchangeability

Another durned flywheel question. Sorry. I need to replace the flywheel on a '68 55 hp Evinrude (part #580686) (motor model #55872R). The former owner gnawed the teeth off. I have a lead on a '69 55 hp Evinrude flywheel (motor model #55972A), flywheel part #580783. Can anyone tell me if...

Need good used flywheel for '68 55hp Rude

I am (slowly) re-habbing a 1968 55hp Evinrude 55872R and have discovered that the flywheel has several spots where the teeth have been gnawed off by the starter. Part #0580686 Does anyone have a good used flywheel that they would be willing to sell for not too much? Thanks

68 Evinrude 55 hp cooling system

I am just beginning to check out a 1968 55 hp Evinrude Triumph with hydro-electric shift outboard. I put the muffs on it, and after a bit of guessing/poking/prodding, got the thing started and running. I noticed there was no water coming out of the two "water discharge and exhause relief" jut...

    68 Evinrude/69 Johnson 55 hp compatability

I have a 68 Evinrude 55 hp electric shift. I also have an opportunity to buy a 69 55 hp Johnson for very little. My thought would be to use the 69 Johnny as a parts motor. My question is, how compatible are the two motors? Are the engines close enough to be basically interchangable as for...

    1968 55hp Evinrude impeller change

I have a 1968 55hp Evinrude Triumph (electric shift) that I just bought and before I get it going, I want to do a few maintenance things to it. I want to change out the impeller. I have the factory service manual and it seems to want me to methodically disassemble the whold engine in order...

Synthetic vs Seafoam in older motors

I have a nicely tuned 1967 6hp Johnson that my mechanic recommended I increase the oil/gas ratio to 40:1 (as opposed to the standard 50:1) - basically a pint per five gallon can. In an earlier post, some of you backed up his thinking. I read with interest a post a couple of days ago where...

    Fuel/oil mix for older motor

I just had my 1967 6 hp Johnson tuned up - new coils, wires, plugs, lower unit oil changed (including new seals), and the thing runs like a top. My mechanic did, however, recommend adding a little extra TC-W3 to the mix, since it is an older motor and would benefit from the extra lube. Do you...

    6 hp Johnson run time

Can anyone here give me a guesstimate on how long a 1967 6 hp Johnson will run on a three-gallon tank? (Motor has just been professionally tuned) I am running it on a light weight 14' (flat-bottomed) Jon boat, prolly about 10 pounds or so of gear, with just myself (about 250#). I am not...

1967 Johnson 6 hp water pump

I have a '67 Johnson 6 hp that I purchased last summer. It worked pretty well, but I have heard that I should replace the water pump every so often. I have no idea when the last owner replaced last. How do I go about replacing? Any giant booby-traps I need to watch out for? Also, how do I...

    1965 Johnson 6hp: dumb questions

Got my old 6hp Johnson running, seems to work pretty good. Dumb question #1: I seem to have the best results starting it when it is at or near full throttle. Is this normal? Or is it a bad thing to do? Dumb question #2: Can't find any kind of shut-off switch, so have been simply...

    1965 Johnson 6 hp CD-22M Shift lever

I am looking for a replacement shift lever for my 1965 6hp CD-22M outboard. I bought it complete with a splendid Vice Grip shift lever which works, but does not seem to be original equipment on the motor. Or should I keep the "after market" accessory? Also, advice on how/when to use the trim...

    1965 Johnson startup help

I just bought a "new" 1965 Johnson 6hp CD-22M. No instruction manual (Not a surprise). Could someone tell me how to set the lean/rich adjustment to start the motor? And what to do after it gets started? The guy I bought it from said it took him some fooling around with the adjustment knob to...
