    used motorguide trolling motor...need help

I downloaded the brute manual for my non-breakaway mount and I am scratching my head. -Does the decker have to be attached and supported by the bow or can it hang over the edge of the boat? -my bow is 3/4 11-ply sealed with varnish....do I need a steel backer plate or are big washers enough...

I screwed up. Varnishing by bow mount motor deck. somewhere between coats 2 and 4 of varnish I started using timber oil. The wood is baltic birch. The oil made its way to covering some of the edge of the opposite side that had nothing on it. So now I am not sure what to do. nce die will end...

    charging an AGM battery

I have an intelligent charger and an Optima D34M It has 3 settings: standard / deep-cycle / gel,AGM The optima website states don't use the gel,AGM setting because it won't fully charge my battery and may damage it over time. Now I did think that they had excellent customer support...

    filling gas tank

I recently added a spot near my trailer tongue to put my boats 6 gallon tank while trailering. When I fill it up should I take it off of the trailer before fueling? My neighbor told me that for safety reasons (sparks) I need to take it off and set it on the curb for fueling. ??? Martian

I have a simple aluminum boat with a small metal nose bow and a bow mount motor that I need to mount but don't have a clue how to fit a secure deck for the mount. the boat was not designed with a deck. I did manage to find a thread with a pic in the iboats forums: I see two small metal...

    venting portable tank

I have 6 gallon manually vented tank in my tin fishing boat it sits under the port seat. There are 2 things I dislike about it: 1) I have to disconnect/connect the fuel line at the motor every outing and a little fuel sometimes spills. 2) There is a manual vent on it and I can often smell...

    aluminum as floor material?

I have seen a couple of boat builds where people use aluminum because it is lighter....only a couple and they did not give numbers on how much lighter it was. Everyone else seems to use plywood. My main concern is weight. is the weight thing true? How about the support and feel under the...

    remote battery starting

I want to put my battery in the front of my boat for better weight distribution but I am worried about a few things. 1) Is the battery too far to crank over the engine? 2) It is a lead acid battery. Will the bit of a bumpy ride at the front be bad for it. I know trolling batteries are...

    What is that deck material?

thank Al Gore for the internet.....where else would I get the answers? Lund puts a vinyl type covering on their floor inserts and I noticed that Legend has what looks like a similar material. What is it and what is the best way to get it stuck to ply? Some boats have carpet....is that...

Hello, I have a 40HP 2007 4 stroke efi Mercury motor and purchased a Fuel Filter & Water Separator and was googling for instructions on how to install it. I ran across a forum that said Mercury recommends that these devices NOT be installed. What gives? Martian.

    AGM battery charging

Hi, I have an AGM deep cycle battery and have been charging at the end of the day with an AGM charger. Someone else I know has theirs charging off of the boat motor whenever it runs so it cycles several times on an outing. Is this charging method OK? tia martian

    another fuel tank question

I have a plain old aluminum boat and I smell gas fumes. The tank I have is plastic. 1) do plastic tanks vent both out an in? 2) do steel tanks vent only inwards so gas fumes do not leak out? 3) can I buy a non-outfuming vent for a plastic tank? thanks, Martian

    throttle adjustment on tiller

This is my first outboard so some of this post may seem trivial to others. -2007 40HP 4 stroke merc tiller -900lbs of aluminum to push, under propped (prop should be pushing 1100-1500lbs) -My boats idle speed is 3mph (too fast for trolling) -there is no play or spring return in the throttle...

baltic birch - front and back casting deck

I have some extra plywood in the garage: 3/4" baltic birch and a lot of 1/2" spruce. I live in South Western Ontario and for my 16 foot tin I want to build casting decks front and back. For baltic birch I have read comments from "rots like a tomato" to people who used it for building a transom...

how loud is a 4-stroke? and water pee

The best way would be to listen to other boats, but, I do not have that opportunity to listen to another 40HP new 4-stroke. The motor seems to vibrate a bit at half throttle and I cannot talk to my buddy without yelling. I am at the motor he is about 10 ft away. ->What should I be expecting...

Boating newbie here. My boat engine was last in the water at the beginning of November and I also ran it at idle in December while on the trailer for 15 minutes. I did not treat the gas with fuel stabilizer and put my tank outside for a couple of snowy months. So today I drained my fuel...
