    Carburetor "Air Vent" Removal

I'm in the process of tearing the carburetor apart on my 1996 9.9 4-stroke Evinrude motor ... and I'm "stuck"! The manual says to remove the "air vent" before cleaning ... and it says to "press the air vent back in" after cleaning. Problem is, I've tried gently pulling and wiggling this plastic...

    4-Stroke "wasted spark" Coil Operation?

Any 4-stroke folks out there who know how the coil is wired on a "wasted spark" system? My E10FREDR motor has one coil, with 1 connection to the ignition module, and 2 plug wire connections. As I understand it, both cylinders fire at (around) TDC on both the compression stroke, and the exhaust...

    Ignition Coil or Plug Wire?

My 9.9 Evinrude 4-stroke (E10FREDR, upgraded to electric start) has a problem running at any engine speed other than idle. I have ruled out fuel tank pickup screen, primer bulb, fuel pump filter screen, and plugs (I installed new ones, properly gapped). Before I dug deeper into the FUEL side...

    1996 Evinrude 9.9 4-stroke Spark Plug Gap?

My owner's manual and the factory service manual for my motor say that the correct plug is Champion RA8HC, gapped to .040" ... but all the charts I find on the internet indicate that the gap should be either .027" or .030" Any ideas as to why the discrepancy?

    What is "auto one-way venting"?

My 6-gal OMC Dura-Tank has no vent screw in the cap, but the tank supposedly has "auto one-way venting" ... is the vent for the tank incorporated into the "manifold assembly"? Is there any simple way to verify that the venting is working correctly?

Not a Spun Prop! Gear shift?

A friend of mine has a late 1990's 90hp Merc outboard that he just put in the water this past weekend. His son was the last to use the boat back in November, and he apparently ran hard aground ... after which he "limped" back home some 15 miles because the boat wouldn't get up on plane at WOT...

    Prop Hub Question

I posted this on the "propeller" forum this morning, but got no responses ... so I'll try it here. A friend called this morning to ask my advice about a spun hub on his 90hp Mercury outboard. He said he bought a hub kit and replaced it, but now at WOT his boat won't plane. I asked him how he...

    Replacing a Spun Hub

A friend called this morning to ask my advice about a spun hub on his 90hp Mercury outboard. He said he bought a hub kit and replaced it, but now at WOT his boat won't plane. I asked him how he went about removing and inserting the new hub ... and he said he "beat out the old one with a mallet"...

Flywheel Puller Bolt Question - SOLVED!

I've posted this question on the Johnson/Evinrude forum last week ... but no one seems to be able to answer it ... so I'm going to try it here! I have a 1996 9.9hp Evinrude 4-stroke .... which I believe was manufactured for OMC by Suzuki. I need to pull the flywheel to replace it, and I need to...

95 Yamaha Tilt Stop Lever Repair

The tilt stop lever on my 115TXRT has become almost impossible to move without a pair of visegrips! I'm assuming that some of the bushings or collars that the shafts go through from each side are worn out and in need of replacement. Is it possible to disassemble this part to replace the...

    OMC Product Replacements?

I'm getting ready to tackle a project on my 9.9 Evinrude 4-stoke ... and in reading the service manual, there are several OMC products mentioned ... specifically: OMC Cleaning Solvent (to clean the crankshaft and flywheel tapers) OMC Gasket Sealing Compound (to coat the flywheel threads before...

    1996 Evinrude 9.9 Flywheel Question - ANSWERED!

Quick question ... what size are the 3 holes in the flywheel for attaching a puller? I want to be sure the puller set I purchase comes with the correct grade 8 bolts! Edit: I think they are 1/4"-20 ... or 5/16"-18 ...

    Converting 9.9 to Electric Start

I'm considering purchasing an electric start kit for my 1996 4-stroke Evinrude (E10FREDR). I'm not sure if the start button switch is part of the kit (176449) and the switch doesn't seem to be available separately (584732). But my main question is ... where is the button located? I've looked at...
