Best Way to Probe For Wet Foam/Wood

1979 AMF Crestliner Muskie 550 14' - I know the transom is wet, not powdery rotten, but dark and damp at the bottom. The floor is solid all the way back. The plan is to replace the transom with NidaBond in the off-season. I need to know the best places to probe for wetness to determine how...

    Foam Tri-Hull Question

Howdy. I have a 1979 Crestliner Muskie 550 14' open bow tri-hull, and I am new to boat repairs (although experienced with repairing many other things). The lower part of the ladder broke on the last outing of the season last year. I ordered a new platform and ladder a month ago and went to...

    When to check for rot?

These iboats forums have a wealth of information! I'm hoping too much information. So I read these restoration threads and now worry my boat has waterlogged foam and a rotten transom. This boat is a 1979, and it was sparsely used (once or twice a year, covered in a barn when not in use) for...

    Babies on Boats

This year we have a 6 month old boy (in addition to the 14 and 12 yr old). The short story is that the wife doesn't want him on the boat. So, he doesn't boat yet. For those of you who have taken or who do take a baby on the boat, are there any additional precautions you take? I would like to...

Adjusted Trim Tab, Still Pulls Hard Right

1979 AMF Crestliner Muskie 550 14' (maybe 15', can't remember now) tri-hull 1978 Evi 70hp 20" gearcase Boat always pulls right. I read up on that and adjusted the trim tab as far as it would go to the right, maybe 30 degrees, but still have to fight to keep it straight. Modifying the trim tab...

Looking for DIY Outboard Swim Platform Pics

The swim ladder on our 14' Open bow tri-hull has been repaired twice, and I don't know if it will survive this season. So, I'd like to make a pair of swim platforms for either side of the outboard. In searching I've seen where several people have used a transom extension motor mount and put a...

    New Prop or Smart Tabs?

1979 15' Crestliner Muskie 550 Tri-Hull 1978 70hp Evinrude outboard My goal is to keep the motor around 5500~5800 rpms WOT with people in the boat while pulling a tube. Motor came with a 17 pitch prop. This prop is fine for two people cruising the lake, but hard to get out of the water with 3...

    Portable Fuel Tank Spillage

Is it 'normal' for fuel to spill out onto the carpet through the cap vent screw while boating? I have a 6 gallon tank like this: There is always a smell of gasoline from this dribbling. 1979 AMC Crestliner Muskie 550 Tri-hull 1978 70hp Evinrude outboard Thanks, CHAD

RPMs - when to get nervous

1978 Evinrude 70hp 1979 15' Crestliner tri-hull 2 adults, 1 teenager riding plus another in tow The Evinrude manual says 5500rpms, but the 13p tubing prop hits 5500rpm with throttle to spare. I start to get nervous around 5500rpm. The 17p cruising prop WOT is 5500rpm, but I've never given WOT...

Diver Down, Jolly Roger ... Flags

We take the boat to teensy lakes in Northwest Missouri. These lakes you can pretty much swim across (Smithville, Mozingo...), so its nothing like Eerie or the Ocean. What flags should I have on hand? I see boats pulling skis or tubes raise an orange flag. I know the diver down flag, but...

Black Goo behind Prop after Seafoam

I ran Seafoam through 3/4 gal fuel, and after a couple of 15 minute run/stop cycles there is a black goo leaking from between the prop and the lower unit. It leaked slowly for about a day afterward and has subsided. I haven't run the motor any more. Thoughts? 1978 70hp Evinrude CHAD

Plastic Ring on Back of Prop? Why?

I was just wanting to know what this piece is. It looks to me like it would actually cause drag. Does it allow ventilation for better hole shot? There is a gap between the aluminum prop and the plastic trim piece all the way around. Thanks, CHAD

1978 70Hp Dies at 2000rpm in Water in Gear

First run out of 20 year storage. I did not rebuild the carbs because it ran great in the driveway <sigh>, and was run about once a year for 10 years, then put in storage. In the driveway in neutral or with the prop engaged the motor runs fine, and also runs fine in the water in neutral. In...
