    Greasing/Lubing the control box?

Does anyone know what kind of grease is in the shift/throttle contol box on older (pre 60's) out boards? I have taken mine apart to inspect and cleaned it up, now I am going to reassemble it. Do they need grease in there or is that just someone being over cautious? Thanks.
