    Gearcase seals

Hey guys, I'm in the process of replacing the clutch dog in my MQ11. I have new spaghetti seal and a new seal for the propshaft. I'm at the point of closing up the gear case, and wondered if I should use gasket sealer on the metal to metal surfaces, or just rely on the spaghetti seal to keep...

    flywheel/timing issue

Hey guys, I've installed and gapped points on my MQ11 1965 seahorse. When I went to fine tune the points at the timing stage, i found that the flywheel would only turn about 1 revolution. At that point, I'd get the clicking sound you get when you open the throttle, and the flywheel just stops...

    Oiler wick

Hey guys, where does the little felt oiler pad that comes in the breaker points box ride? I'm thinking it goes on the back of the moveable point arm and rests against the cam so as to apply oil during rotation. Is that about right? Engine is a '65 MQ11 9-1/2HP.

    Armature plate

Hey guys, I'm getting ready to install points and condensers in a '65 MQ11. The Clymer's manual says to start things off by moving the armature plate to the full advanced position, but offers no instruction as to how this is done, and as good as that manual is, the photos in this particular...

Man am I stuck! Need advice.

Guys, I'm putting the MQ11 back together. All went well with the gear case, but when I went to mate the lower unit with the upper, I ran into problems. I made the connection between the linkage and the shift rod, but that's as far as it will go in. The gear shift is in reverse, the linkage is...

Fuel pump for a 9.5 hp Johnson MQ11

Guys, I am trying to find a fuel pump for a 9.5 hp MQ11. Sierra Marine sells one(part#18-7350) that fits 9.9 hp motors made prior to 1992. Marine Engine.com says that unit will not work on my motor. Is there really that much of a difference between a 9.5 hp unit and a 9.9 hp unit?

    Clutch dog

I have a '67 9.5 Johnson Seahorse, Model MQ11. It won't stay in forward gear. Upon opening the lower unit and examining the clutch dog, I found slight, and I do mean SLIGHT wear on one face. What's stopping me from turning the clutch dog around upon re-assembly? I suspect I'd loose reverse gear...

    Gear case head question

I have the gear case apart on my '65 9.5 hp Seahorse. I can see from micro fish that there is a seal at the gear case head, along with an o-ring. Does anybody know if I need a special tool to remove that seal from the gear case head? Holding it in my hand, I'm not sure how it's supposed to come...

    Fuel pump question

I have a '65, 9.5 HP Seahorse, model MQ11. I need a replacement fuel pump. The book calls for part #382224, but I remember seeing a post somewhere in these threads that a 397274 or after market equivalent would work. Any thoughts? The 397274 is about half the price.

    clutch dog issue(maybe?)

I recently bought a '65 Johnson 9.5 hp Seahorse. It was tough to start, and ran rough, but I figured a carb kit and a tune up would do the trick. While I was at it, I changed the impeller. Once I got it back in the water, I found that at anything above idle speed, it popped out of forward gear...

    recoil starter problems

I have a '67 Johnson 6HP Seahorse. The recoil spring is shot, so I aquired a new (used) one off E-Bay. The seller had nearly 100% feedback, and said the spring was working when he tested motor compression. I took down the old assembly, inserted the new spring, and tightened everything back up...

Johnson Model CD24 high speed needle

I have a CD24 (1967) that has a 7/16" hex bolt where the high speed needle should be (according to the manual). There's no packing nut, no needle, and no way to get to it unless you're double jointed, short of taking the carb off. Has anybody else run into this? Did certain models of the CD24...
