125hp idle problems

I've got a 1988 Force 125, but it actually looks like it was possibly pieced together from several Force motors.

With a little starting fluid, I can get it to start. Once it starts, I can keep it running as long as I keep the RPMs up, but if it drops below 1200 rpms, it will die.<br...

    Speaking of overheating...

I have a 1988 Force 125, which has a "tempurature" wire from the engine. I assume this is connected to the alarm under the dash. Is this just an overheating alarm on/off, or can it be attached to a gauge and give me a tempurature reading?

    Perspective...

Much of our hardships are perspective. I've seen plenty of thought-provoking and inspirational threads, I thought I'd share my own.

Several years ago, I was driving home from work, I was downshifting on a small hill, and the transmission went out.

This happened at a time...

Tilt rebuilt, still attached to motor?

I haven't gotten too terribly far into this project, but I need to rebuild the tilt cylinder on my 88 Force 125. The problem is, I'm having a heck of a time removing the lower trim mount shaft, which means I cannot remove the tilt cylinder completely. Can I rebuild it while it is still attached...

Quick tip for diagnosing ignition problems...

In order to properly diagnose ignition problems, the manual calls for a "Peak Voltage Detector." However, most multi-meters only measure RMS voltage, and will not work. Peak Voltage detectors can be expensive for just a single use.

Here's a quick little tip. You can make a peak...

    Force specs?

I have a Clymer repair manual for ALL Force outboards from 1984-1999, but it doesn't have specifics for each engine, like weight, displacement, bore and stroke...

I'm trying to find the wieght of my 1988 Force 125. Anybody have this info, or know where I can find it?

    Year from model number?

Ok, I am trying to confirm the year of my Force 125. I tried the search, but the only info I got was people asking questions, and other people answering, but never got the code behind it all.

My motor model number is 1241X8B, and my serial number is 2132.

I think it's a...

    Problems with idle...

I have a 1988 Force 125 that I've been working on for quite some time. After replacing the entire ignition system, and a complete carb rebuild, I FINALLY got it to start, for the first time since I've had it.

However, it will only run at 1/8 throttle, about 1500RPMs. It will not...

    Bayliner Hull number

I'm trying to identify the exact model of my Bayliner, which I should be able to do from the hull number. Anybody have the Bayliner magic decoder ring?

    Prop Shaft nut and ignition

I had an old 1989 Force 125 with a seized piston, so I replaced it with a 1988 Force 125 off ebay.

The problem is, it seems there was a change in the prop shaft nut size during these years. My old 1989 shaft nut is too big, and the new 1988 didn't come with a shaft nut. I've tried...

    1988 Force 125 ignition

Ok, I may be a little premature in posting this topic.

I purchased a 1988 Force, and it was claimed to have a complete rebuild and runs very strong. After installing it, I tried to fire it up last weekend, and it only had a spark on #3 cylinder. It was late, and I didn't have time...

    Force Trim/Tilt fluid

Just as I was supposed to, I did a search on the subject, but came up with many different answers. So now, I need to find out which answer is correct.

I have two engines, an '89 Force 125 and an '88 Force 125. (basically the same engines)

What is the proper tilt/trim...

    Lower Unit rebuild

Why are lower units so expensive? I'm being quoted $1000 to get my lower unit rebuilt. I can purchase a rebuilt Chevy 350 for that kind of money. Are they truly that complex? So complex that I can't rebuild it myself? (I've rebuilt motors on ATV's before, so I'm pretty handy with a wrench)

    seat foam

Replacing the lounge seats in my Bayliner is not a problem, I just buy new seats, but what do I need to replace the rest of the seat cushions around the back and the open bow? Obviously I need a marine-grade vinyl, but is there such a thing as a marine-grade foam?

All the closed-cell...

    Old gas?

I don't know how long the gas tank has been sitting. I don't even know if there is any gas in it to drain out. Is there any way to clean out the gas tank without removing it? It's built in!

    Changing shaft length

I've seen many talk about changing the shaft length on a motor, but they've all been less than 40hp. Does anybody have any info on changing shaft lengths for big motors 100hp and up?

I don't have a particular brand in mind, I just want to know what options I can keep open.

    Over Powered?

What is involved in the max horsepower rating of a boat? What happens if I exceed that? I can't believe it's just an issue of the weight ofthe outboard.

    higher RPM's?

I'm new to the forum, but there seems to be alot of debate over 2-stroke vs. 4-stroke.

Do 2-strokes operate at higher engine rpms than 4-strokes? Again, engine rpms, not prop rpms.

I know alot about dirt bike and motocross engines. In dirt bikes, 2-strokes operate at much...

    worth saving?

I need a little help. I just bought a 1989 Bayliner Capri, and have no experience with boats.

I took the cover off the motor, which is a Force 125 (1989, I assume) and the cylinder head is off, and the #3 piston is siezed. It looks like the guy took a hammer and chisel to the...
