    Help Identify This Boat...

Can anyone tell me more about this boat? At first I thought it was a Viking, but now not too sure. Yes, it is ugly. Yes, my friends laugh at me. But, I have a specific need for THIS boat. I love it, and I break into a sweat when I see a pic of one. So, please help. I figure from the 1970's? I...

    Chrysler 105 Charger

Little history first... I bought this boat/motor for $75! Yep, you heard right, $75. I already sold the rack and pinion steering for $80, so I'm $5 ahead. The guy said the motor is really, really hard to start, but once it's going, it will start all day long. Turned out to be a broken wire...

    Tips from my shop

Thought I would pass along a couple of tips that we use in my shop. Perhaps others could add their little tips and tricks too! 1) Goof-Off and a green scotch-brite scrubbing pad will make an old rub rail look brand new! 2) To refurbish that yellowed clear coat, try light wet sanding with 2000...

    Just paint it already!!!!

After much hem-hawing around deciding on a paint color, I finally picked a color and went for it. Grey. It's my favorite color. Makes it look like a work boat, and anyone that knows me and knows me well knows that I love work boats. I am not into the flashy ski boats. I didn't mask off the...

Reason for delay in project progress - or - Lessons in fiberglass repair!

Wow... Sometimes previous damage is not noticeable until the hull is sanded, but this is unbelievable. Here is a piece I pulled off the keel. Seems the previous owner beached this boat a few too many times and tried to repair it. This chunk was easily pulled off by hand. The glass fabric...

    Catamaran to power boat conversion?

A guy in town has some 18 foot catamaran hulls that are in really good shape, and they are about 28 inches tall - he only wants $150 for the pair. I was wondering if I could use these as a basis to build a cat power boat? You know, take the hulls, space them about 7 feet apart and build a deck...

    Call for Console Pics

I'm at it again. Burning up the CAD and designing a center console. I mock them up with cheap press board to see how it works. Now I have a pile if press board pieces. If you have a center console, could you post a pic and some general dimensions too? Thanks.

    Can't leave well enough alone

Ok, so we have two things going against us - 1) We are men, and 2) We are boat builders. That equates to "We can't leave well enough alone". We can't help it, we are perfectionists. After countless hours of prep, I laid 3 coats of beautiful topside paint. Followed that with 6 coats of...

    Glow in the dark paint

Picture this... You are out fishing for Catfish at night. Can't see a thing, so you set up a light/lantern. Then you have bugs flying all around. How cool would it be if I took Rustoleums Glow-Max paint (8-12 hour glow time) and painted the cockpit areas with it. Then, I could fish all...

    PE hole fix

A fellow gave me a 10' Bass Hunter. Pretty good shape except for a 2" hole. From what I understand, normal glass/epoxy resin won't stick to PE or PP. Bass Hunter's website listed a repair kit made just for their boats. Any ideas?

    Help me choose bottom color

I have narrowed it down to RED, BLUE, or YELLOW. Of course, I'd like to hear other choices as well. I think the blue would show less of the surface imperfections, but every boat is blue. I drove to the marinas the other day for inspiration, and then I saw the bright yellow Sea Tow boats. Whoa!

    Long shaft or short shaft

It's time to shop for a motor... I have a 19' boat and the transom measures 21" at the deepest point. Is that a short shaft or long shaft, and what are the inches for both? For instance, I saw an ad for a 25" shaft. Is that a short or long? Which do I need for my boat?

    tilt/trim difference?

Excuse the newbie question, but what is the difference between tilt and trim? Aren't they the same?

Can my boat support this cabin?

Just playing around here, but it sure would be neat. Take a look at my 19' boat project link below. Do you think My boat will support a cabin like this? Doesn't need to be a full stand-up, but for sitting in. I know I didn't mention materials/weight and such, but just in general. I have the...

    Save that dust!

This weekend I have done nothing to my project but fill holes. With the rub rail off, there were so many holes to fill. And, on the first day I removed every spec of hardware from the entire boat. So, yeah, I had some holes. I wanted to fill them with epoxy, but that was getting expensive...

    Fuel tank installation

Time has come to start shopping/installing my fuel tank. Does someone have, or can point me to a link, a schematic of the typical fuel tank system? I want to make sure I have everything properly installed.

My center console build and plans

I built it from regular 1/4 hardwood ply from Home Depot. I know some might chastise me for not using marine grade, but I figure it's just a console that will have a cover on it when not in use, and besides it will be fully epoxied and glassed too. The frame pieces are 3/4 x 3/4 strips. I...

    Boat re-christening?

I have heard before that it is un-lucky to rename a boat. But with an approaching rebirth of an old boat draws near, I wonder about christening an old boat that was restored?

Essential must-have tools for boat building

I took a snap of what I consider "Must Have" tools for working on boats... Cigarettes for the nerves Goody powders for the headaches and Monster Energy drinks for a boost during the late nights. ... Let's see some of your "essential" tools. Let's see who will be the first to post a pic of...

    Motor size?

I was hoping to find this in the engine FAQ sticky's, but didn't. I need a motor for my 19' CC. It's a project, so it doesn't have a plate with recommended HP size. If I recall, there used to be a formula based on LOA x Beam x something, something, something? The P.O. said it had a 70hp on...
