    Merc 4.0 1970 or 71 no spark

Picked up a nice 1970 or 71 4.0 with the Phase maker ignition with no spark. The young lad I bough it from said he replaced the coil. The coil has no part numbers on it, its black, and the metal tab contacting the neg terminal to the center rod on the coil is twisted. He held it down with...

1971 Evinrude 4HP Mag plate froze

Hello, I picked up a good 71 4 as a project. Has been sitting and has OEM coils which are shot. I have removed the Mag plate and cleaned and lubed the base plate. All look normal, but when I tighten down the 4 screws that hold it in place it all but freezes up. Can move it but very hard...

Chrysler 8HP how to model year identify

Picked up a 9.9HP Chrysler as a project. Plate says model number 92BE, and its Canada made. I am guessing its a 1970 to 1975 vintage, but have not found any way to confirm this. (ignore 8HP in title, was not able to edit)

    1987 Merc 9.9 vs 1996 9.9 Carb specs

I have both of these motors. The 87 has a .52 main jet & WMC23 carb. This carb has a bigger venturi than on the 1996 which has a .48 main jet. The 87 is the 12 cu Powerhead and the 96 has the 16 cu inch. The 87 9.9 seems to have more top end speed. Why would the 95+ 9.9's have a smaller...

1996 Mercury 9.9 compression relief ports

I know the 12 cubic inch block has compression relief ports for easy starting, but does the 16 cubic inch also have these? I have a 87 9.9 with 100 PSI compression, and a 96 9.9 with 120 PSI. Could these ports be making the difference?

1963 Evinrude 5.5 will not start

Hello, I picked up a 63 5.5 to play around with and cant get it to fire. Has good spark from both coils. I have sprayed quick start in cylinders and carb. (also gas) and nothing. Compression is 90 PSI in both. Any ideas? Never had this much trouble before, as I have not even got it to...

OMC BRP Fuel pump part numbers

I am confused by all the different part numbers for the older square style fuel pump. I found this one on eBay but it says only used by 9.9 and 15hp. I thought all motors from 1966 to 1987 4 - 40 HP used the same pump?

Mercury 9.9 2 stroke water entering bottom cylinder

I have a 89 Merc 9.9 (not a Yamaha) That runs rough at idle and higher speeds. Lower plug always looks wet/grey emulsion and often small water droplets on Compression good at 105 PSI in both, gas is fresh and 50:1 New plugs installed, both getting good spark. (has aftermarket CDI box) Carb...

Mercury 9.9 runs bogs down at high speed

Have a 1989 9.9 that dies out or bogs over 1/3 throttle. Seems to start fine and runs okay (although a bit rough) at low speeds. Had carb apart last fall and it was clean with proper main jet. Compression is good. Any ideas where to start? Could this be a fuel pump?

Evinrude power pack, new aftermarket or OEM used?

I am building a 1984 8HP Evinrude from 2 doners. I have the choice of power packs, 31 year old OEM which has stood the test of time. Or a new aftermarket CDI (made in Germany) pack I realise electronics either works or it doesn't, but which pack would you use? I'm leaning twords the new...

Carb size for 8, 9.9 and 15 HP

Doing some research on different carb sizes for the early (87-90) mercury Mariner outboards. From what I have found the 8HP has a "44" cast into the throat, the 9.9 has "52" and the 15 has "54". Can anyone confirm this with their own engines?

Spark Plugs for Merc 9.9 2 stroke

Guys, the Merc 9.9 I just bought has the original Champion perma-gap spark plugs. L78V i think. I assume these are no longer what should be used? A standard NGK plug is best I assume?

I have a 72 Evinrude I bought for $50. It starts and runs for 3-4 mins then it slowly dies. Spark is very strong when checked cold. I changed the points and condenser and same thing. I have a 89 Merc 9.9 (not a Yamaha) that only starts when cold and runs for about 30 seconds and stalls. after that it will fire for 3-4 seconds and stalls each time. Plugs are wet when removed and fuel shows in water, so it is running rich. Compression good at 105 PSI in both New plugs...

    Merc 9.9 Carb pulse hose

I have a Merc 9.9 that the previous owner has crimped off the small rubber line that runs the block (Intake access cover?) and goes under the carb to a T fitting. The hose continues on to a fitting at the bottom of the block. The hose at the T is cut and crimped off with ty-wraps. The hose that...

1989 Mercury 9.9 carb size vs. smaller engines

I just bought a 1989 Merc 9.9. I also have a 88 Mariner 9.9. I noticed the Mercury has a smaller carb throat size compared to my Mariner. It also shows signs that the carb was taken off at some point. Unless there was a model change between 88 and 89, someone has put on a smaller carb...
