Shift interrupt switch not lining up right

Since I bought the boat last year I've had a lot of difficulty getting it out of gear and back to neutral when on the water. I thought it was the shift cable as I began having trouble getting INTO gear this year. However after replacing the shift cable and doing some research I learned it is my...

    Holley 4160 600cfm Carb flooding / drips gas - Mercruiser 4.3

Hi all. More boating, more problems :faint2: I have a 1989 Mercruiser 4.3 that was rebuilt with a Holley carb (the carb is about 2 years old). This past weekend it started running super rich. Black smoke, stalling out, strong smell of gas in the exhaust, and when I looked at the carb it was...

What shift cable do I need? Mercruiser 4.3 6cyl with Alpha One

Hi all. I'm going to replace the lower shift cable for my Alpha One. The only 'part number' I could find was a number printed on the brass jacket where the threaded part begins near the shift plate on the engine. That number is 032312. Haven't been able to find anything relevant to a shift cable...

Is it ok to change the battery terminal connector coming from the motor?

My leads that hook up to my battery for my Mercruiser 4.3 I/O currently have the post type connector. I would like to cut that off and change to 3/8" so it will fit onto a battery switch that I bought so I can switch between batteries. Is that ok to do? Thanks!

Loose n' jiggly Quicksilver throttle lever

Just bought a used boat and the throttle control lever is, for a lack of a better term, jiggly. A good amount of movement front/back and side to side, but manages to control the throttle just fine. I noticed the set screw at the bottom of the handle was missing, so I put a new one in nice and...

    Can't remove old steering cable

Hey there. I have an issue with removing my old steering cable from the splashwell. The steering arm runs through a threaded tube that pokes out of a boot on the side of the splashwell, then attaches to a plate on the front of the motor via a swivel type nut which is attached to the steering...

    Timing on a 1964 Mercury Merc 850

Hoping someone can help me out here. I need to check the timing on my 1964 merc850. I have a Clymer manual but it only lists the timing specs for the 850 with Thunderbolt ignition, which I'm pretty sure I don't have. I don't have a Mercury service manual yet. I was hoping someone on here could...

Low RPMs at WOT - 1964 Mercury 85hp

My old prop was in dire need of replacement so I ordered a new 13 1/4 x 19 prop. Put it on and the boat ran like crap. Wouldn't get up to 4000 rpm or over about 10mph. I obviously ordered the wrong size  I took the old one into the shop and the guy told me I need a 13 1/4 x 17 prop...

    Newbie help - Round 2......please?

1964 Mercury Merc 850 Runs fine on muffs Heres what my motor is doing in the water: - I have to have the fast idle way up to start, sometimes even when its warmed up - always have to choke it regardless - has a hard time idling in the water, won't go into forward without stalling unless I gun...

Newb needs help - Leaky cylinders? Bad plugs?

I put these plugs in less than two weeks ago and have fired the engine up on muffs, and a few times out on the lake last weekend. The motor ran like crap on the water, wouldn't go into gear without stalling, wouldn't idle for long, etc... Ran fine on muffs though. I'm taking the carbs off for...

Whats your method for filling up your tank?

New boat owner. Just had to drain about 10 gallons of old cruddy gas from my 20 gallon tank. Now I'm faced with the challenge of filling the tank with 20 gallons of mixed gas to fuel the outboard. I'm assuming I can't just put in some gas, then add the oil, then add the rest of the gas hoping...

Draining and disposal of old gas

Looking for ideas on how to dispose of about 10 gallons of old gas. I have a pretty large tank and cant exactly move it around easily. Are there places that will take my old cruddy gas like they take used motor oil? Thanks

1964 Mercury 850 - Wont start without choke. Won't go into forward without stalling

Ok, I was going to write a long detailed story of my afternoon but then I figured it would be best to cut right to the chase. Motor: 1964 Mercury 850 - Outboard Problems: - stalls out when put into forward drive unless I gun it hard, and even if i gun it hard, its hit or miss - reverse seems...

1964 Mercury 850 (85hp) Engine doesn't crank, leaking a good amount of gas

Just bought a cheap project boat that came with a 1964 Mercury 850. At first it was cranking a little, then fading out. Then it would click until I waited 5-10 minutes. I noticed the smell of gas so I took the cowling off of the motor. I squeezed the primer and noticed gas dripping out but could...

    Drain plug question

Hi all. New to the forum and to boating in general. Just picked up a project boat that appears to have two holes that would require a drain plug, but I'm not sure. I'm adding the image of the two holes. I only have one drain plug. Which hole do I plug? Sorry for the newb question, just don't...

    ID my motor?

Just got this boat as a cheap project. Its my first boat and I know next to nothing about them other than how to start and drive them. I'm trying to figure out what year my motor is but I can't find a serial #. Where should I look for it? The boat is a 1976 Invader Aquarius open bow. The guy...
