Can you change a Tohatsu 9.9 hp to 20 hp?

I’ve got a 3 yr old Tohatsu 9.9 hp outboard, and would like to get more speed. I’ve heard that a simple carb change can increase the motor to 20 hp. Is this correct? If so, about how much speed increase would I get on my 16 ft. flat bottom? Now, it goes about 12 mph tops When I’m alone.

    9.9 Tohatsu warning light problem

I’ve got two Tohatsu 9.9 outboards. Both are great motors, but when I’m running full throttle, occasionally I’ll feel a miss in the motor, look back, and the red oil pressure light is on; the motor stills run fine. I then back off the throttle to ‘idle’ and the light goes out. I’ll go back to...

Oil light warning on 9.8 motors

I’ve got several Tohatsu/Nissan 9.8 4 stroke motors. If I’m going full throttle, sometimes the motor will miss and the low oil light comes on. If I back off to idle, the oil light goes off & everything returns to normal. This occurs on my motors and a friends 9.8 Mercury (manufactured by...

    Trim tab corrosion

I borrowed a good friend's boat with a 2013 9.8 Tohatsu outboard, and noticed his trim tab has severe corrosion; it looks like a beaver has been chewing on it! The motor is an electric start, with only a trolling motor and depth finder wired up. He's put very few hours on the motor. I've...

Battery size for Tohatsu 50 hp TLDI

The starting battery on my 50 hp TLDI Tohatsu died after three years and I'm having a hard time finding a replacement. About the largest battery under $200 I can find has a cca rating of 800 and a ca rating of 1000. The manual states that a 850 cca battery is necessary. I read that the...

    Loud, smoking Nissan 9.8

My 2012 9.8 Nissan recently has gotten very loud and now started smoking somewhat. It starts, runs and idles well. I changed the oil last year, filling it to about half full on the dipstick. I checked the oil yesterday, and the dipstick showed the oil level to be very high--almost to the top...

    9.9 hp Mercury not starting

My 2011 9.9 hp manual start motor would always start on the first pull, run and idle great. Recently, it would start and run fine. After I killed it with the 'off' switch and let it sit, it wouldn't start --not even hit, but would start later. Now, it won't start at all. I removed the plugs...

    Noisy Nissan 9.8 4-stroke

I have a 2012 Nissan 9.8 hp that is just out of warranty. Recently it has started sounding considerably louder than my friends 9.8 4-stroke Mercury motors. It runs a fine as it ever has; starts easily, idles smoothly and doesn't miss at all. Any ideas? Do these motors have mufflers?

Tohatsu TLDI oil system malfunction rates

I read somewhere that the new Nissan/Tohatsu 4-stroke has a much more reliable oil system than do the older TLDI 2-cycle motors? Is this correct? Do any of you shop guys see many problems with the TLDI oil injection systems?

A friend has a 3 yr old Mercury 15 hp motor and wants to use it on a lake with a 9.9 motor limit. He wants to buy a new 9.9 cover to replace the old one. Will the 9.9 cover mount on the 15 hp motor? and what is the approximate cost of the cover? Thanks!

    Need a Minn-Kota Edge mount

I've got two Minn-Kota Edge foot controlled trolling motors; one is a 2007 & the other is a 2008. Minn-Kota changed the mounts after 2007, and the later model has much less 'slack' in the mount and is much quieter. Where can I find a later model mount? I've searched Craigslist around here...

    50 hp TldI overheating indicator

I put my boat in the lake last week after not using it all summer. The 50 hp TLDI Tohatsu started and ran normally. While going down the lake the temp. indicator buzzer started, along with the indicator light. I looked back and no water was coming from the 'pee hole'. After limping back to...

Tohatsu 50 hp TLDI being discontinued?

I read somewhere that Tohatsu is discontinuing manufacture of their 40/50 hps TLDI motors in favor of 4 strokes. Is this correct? If so, what is the advantage of a 4-stroke system over the TLDI motor?

    Tohatsu 50 TLDI running rough

I purchased a 50 hp Tohatsu TLDI last January, ran it through the break-in period last spring and recently started using it for winter fishing (my favorite season). Recently it began missing and running rough at both high & low speed. The dealer recommended that before I bring it in to change...

    Tohatsu 50 TLDI running rough

I bought a 50 TLDI Tohatsu last January, ran it enough to break it in last spring and it recently has started running rough and missing at high speed. Called the dealer and he said to change the spark plugs first, change the gas ( I don't use ethanol gas) and double check the battery. He said...

    'Kicker' motor advice

I need some advice: I've got a 1751 Polarcraft with a 50 hp. long shaft TLDI Nissan tiller motor that I use for the larger lakes here in Arkansas. However, most of my fishing is done on a smaller lake with a 10 hp. motor limit. My 'small lake' boat is powered by a 9.9 Nissan short shaft 4...

    Temp. of water pump exhaust?

I recently got a 1988 9.9 evinrude, and had the carb. and water pump replaced before I even had it in the water. It runs ok, but the water pump stream seems a little weak, although adequate. However after running it to operating temp., the 'pee' stream feels really hot and the top of the...

Kill switch fix for 1988 15 hp

My 1982 15 hp Evinrude wouldn't start, and I discovered the button on the kill switch was broken off. I shorted the wires and now the motor run fine, except the only way to kill it is to choke it out. I was going to replace the button, but the only part I can find is the entire apparatus...
