Replace the drive shaft seal or all in MC-1 outdrive?

Took the boat out a few days ago for the first time and it ran great! This morning I noticed my lower unit is leaking oil (milky yellow color) from a small, 1/8-inch hole that I believe usually has water coming from it when I hook up the earmuffs. Did a forum search and discovered the...

Do I need to charge a new marine deep cycle battery?

Did some searching on the forum, but haven't found a clear answer. I have found to let it go and just install it, but also to either "run it down" and then charge it at 2amps or just throw it on 2amps and check with a meter for approximately 12.87 eventually and then stop charging it. Thanks!!

Should I mount a Perko battery switch to the battery case?

I am in the process of installing a Perko and was wondering if it would be stupid to mount it to the marine battery case (absolutely very little available places to mount at the stern and read to keep nearest the battery and away from helm... drill the small holes through the plastic and secure...

Advice upon installing Perko Dual Battery switch

I read it's a mandatory item to turn off the current to the dual batteries when the boat is not in operation. My questions are 1) Where would be the best place to mount it? 2) Do I keep the engine (ignition, starter, alternator, etc.) on one battery and all accessories (vhf radio, stereo, fish...

Question when replacing an automotive carb with a Marine Holley 650

It was suggested to me that “When you rig your fuel system and carburetor keep your eyes open for the clear vent tube that runs from the fuel pump to the carburetor. It is a tell-tale for you to know if the fuel pump is running on its original diaphragm. If it ever fills with fuel you then need...

Do you recommend using black liquid tape?

What is your take on applying the black liquid tape to clean connections when ready? Is there specific marine item or something like the attached product. Thx.

I just want to thank each and every one of you guys, I know recognition of every iboat member is impossible, but special thanks to *aChris, fisher, Bond-O, *Don S., and the many others that have provided me great insight in regards to doing these properly and not cutting corners. I am in the...

Help replacing an automotive distributor with Marine Flamethrower Ign II

Here is the automotive distributor that the previous owner had in the boat. It had a wire coming from behind the distributor (on backside of transom inner-wall) going to the area noted with the green arrow. Would that be the resistor wire discussed below? If so, do I just cut it off...

Fuel gauge not working, but all other are true...See 2 pics...

Just wondering if any one with some background sees anything that stand out as an obvious issue and needs addressed. Do the connectors look like they should be replaced..corrosion or poorly crimped? Thank you for your time.

A little help identifying my engine please...

I'm piggy-backing off a previous post on another board. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=555985 I just recently purchased my neighbor's 1982 Renken Bow-rider model 950. I have the hull# ID. The fuel gauge does not work and the lights on the temp gauge flickers. The boat was given to...

How do I identify what my boat's specs are w/o the manual?

I just recently purchased my neighbor's 1982 Renken Bow-rider model 950. I have the hull# ID. The fuel gauge does not work and the lights on the temp gauge flickers. The boat was given to my neighbor by his father-in-law. A boat manual does not exist. My neighbor said the engine was "rebuilt,"...

Replaced an auto alternator with A MARINE MOTOROLA ALTERNATOR, BUT...

Previous owner had an automotive alternator which I discovered (through this forum input, thanks folks!) so I went to the marine shop and purchased a marine Motorola alternator... Advance Auto took the auto one back and refunded my neighbor ~$60.00, but the marine alternator ran me ~$160.00...

Are marine and auto alternators interchangeable?

From a previously started thread... "I purchased an older, 1982 Renken 185 Bow-rider, boat from a neighborhood gentleman. He ?inherited? it from his father-in-law. A month or two ago, the neighbor "replaced the alternator with one from Advance Auto that looked almost similar according to the...

    Alternator exciter (tan) wire question

Should I attach the tan wire to the alternator's Bat+ terminal instead of keeping the red one attached as shown in the photos provided? The previous owner replaced the alternator and is somewhat certain that the red wire was capped off with a wire nut. I guess that would mean the tan wire would...

Tan wire running under the alternator?

Good evening! I purchased an older, 1982 Renken 185 Bow-rider, boat from a neighborhood gentleman. He ?inherited? it from his father-in-law. At one point, the engine was replaced with a bigger I/O motor.. a 350 GM. There is a thick tannish wire, thicker than wires that run accessories, but not...
