    Bottom paint is TOUGH

As some of you know I have picked up a 24 footer for free. It's a 92 Monark that I believe has the original bottom paint. It's been left in salt water all it's life and I don't think it's ever been redone ( bottom paint). It has bad chicken pox scars but none (so far) are deep enough to be an...

    Sealed logs???

I have read a lot but havn't quite figured out if I should have vented plugs or not. If vented and there are leaks, logs can fill. Unvented, logs can only fill until pressure is equilized. Let's say I don't know of a leak. Should I vent the plugs or not?

    New pontoon deck covering

I have done a lot of research on this subject. And I found an old post from a commercial roofer saying he wanted to use rubber roofing material for his decking. He was pretty much ridiculed for this idea , and there was reference made to a rubber door mat on a deck that rotted. I am thinking of...

    Salty pontoons need anode?

Just picked up this new old boat. 1992 monark 24ft pontoon. It looks like it's lived its whole life docked in saltwater or brackish water. There is a very good bottom paint on it but it is time to replace it. Once I get all the bottom paint off I would prefer to leave it bare aluminum. I have...

    Bent deflector fin

Hello, first time here. I've been over at Johnson/Evinrude forum a lot. Going this weekend to pick up my first ever pontoon. Been looking here and found a lot of great insight into pontoons. I'd like to know how difficult it is to straighten a bent deflector fin and what's the best technique...

    prop on pontoon

Hey guys, been a little while. Looking at getting a 24' pontoon. Twin toon, early 90ish. I already have a 70 hp Johnson to put on it. Motor has the standard 13 1/4 x 17 prop. Just tryin to get some input on how that prop might work on the toon. There would almost never be more than 4 adults...

70ESL75E have fuel, spark, and comp...no start

I just picked up this '75 Johnson 70 and put it on my boat. Compression is 110 on all three cylinders. I know that's a little low but it runs and I'm hoping a decarb will fix that since it had been sitting. I put a new impeller in and hit the water yesterday. Runs fine with maybe 1/3 throttle...

    33E70 flooding UPDATE

I had this 1970 model 33 for almost 2 years and once I got it running good I never had another issue with it. A couple months ago I sold it to a guy at work and now he can't forget my phone number. He keeps having a problem with it flooding and fuel running out of the carb vent. About a month...

    15 spline prop.

Could someone tell me what motors use a 15 spline prop shaf?. I have a nice SS prop with no idea what it fits.

    whats actual HP?

Just sitting here with a cold one, taking a break from getting boat ready for tomorrow. I got to thinkin (usually not a good thing) that older motors are HP rated at the crank, then what HP am I actually getting out of a 1973 85 horse Johnson at the prop? I dont really care because it pushes my...

    Trying to optimize setup

I have a 16' starcraft v160 (glass) with an 85 Johnson. A/V plate is 1/2" above bottom most part of transom. No t/t. Tilt rod is in 2nd hole which puts motor as close to 90 degrees to bottom of boat as is possible. A/V plate is right at surface of water when on plane. I have two props, both s/s...

    Hose fitting on old Johnson

I was wondering if a garden hose fitting could be installed into the side of the leg on a 1973 85hp Johnson and work the same as what is on newer motors. Would it supply enough water or would it run out of the bottom faster than the hose could supply it?

    Prop change... What to expect?

I believe details will likely be irrelevant to this question because I have no tach or speed numbers to give. I will give as much detail about the boat as I can. It's a 1970 Starcraft V160. 16' glass semi deep-V, 85 hp Johnson. No clue as to weight. I have a 13 1/4x17 ss on it right now. It does...

motor won't turn all the way

I recently picked up an old Bayliner Capri and put my 85 hp Johnson on it. The steering ram would hit the port side of the splashwell not allowing full travel. I cut a hole there to allow the arm to go through thinking that was all it needed. Now I have found that it still won't turn any...

    OMC steel tank vent?

I don't really know where to post this so I'm asking here. If it needs to be moved, feel free. I have an old 6 gallon metal tank in really good shape that I wanna use. It's not a two line tank so I assume it's not a pressure tank. Question is... How does it vent?

    tach setting

I have a US Marine tach in an old Bayliner. If the tach still works what pole setting would be right for a Johnson 85ESL73M ? Thanks

    Are all wives like this?

I got this old boat and the transom is in pretty rough shape. We can limp along another season at no wake speeds since we normally do that anyway, we have a 4 year old and a nervous mama... Those 2 don't go well with WOT. I've convinced her that we can get a free or extremely cheap boat to...

    Hull shape question

I'm looking at two different boats with different hull shapes and would like some opinions on how each would act. Both are deep v's. One still has a pretty good v to it at the stern. The other transitions from the deep v to almost flat across the stern. The v starts almost identical on both...
