Plug #1 is closest to the pullys, right?

On a Volvo 3.0. I’m making sure I’m using the correct wire for setting the timing.

Spots on hull where someone apparently used rubbing compound.

I have a few spots on my hull were it looks like someone used rubbing compound to remove something. The result is a dull area with swirl marks were you can see they rubbed. Anything I can do to revitalize it?

Accidentally put a liter of gear oil down dipstick hole.

So I somehow misread the instructions and thought I was supposed to fill my Volvo SX through the dip stick hole. I figured it out after putting a liter into it. Will this oil just flow down to where it is supposed to go, or do I need to do anything to fix my mistake?

I accidentally let gasket maker get on my vinyl seat, and it left an ugly yellow stain. Any ideas on how to remove it?

My carb: super high idle & fuel leaking

I reassembled my 98 Volvo 3.0, hooked it up to muffes, and turned over the engine. I was anticipating I would need to tinker with it to get it to run, but to my surprise it fired up the very first time. I immediately noticed it was "idling" around 2800 rpms and killed it. I looked down the...

Ughhh, my port forward engine mount bolts aren’t aligned.

I was literally doing the final things before I tried to start the engine after doing all of this work to it, when I placed the insert between the engine mount and the block, I immediately noticed something wasn’t correct. The engine is aproximately 3/8” lower than where the bolts from the...

Fuel pump vent clogged. What should I do?

I was ready today to reconnect the hoses and fuel line and see if my 98 3.0l engine will crank. I had to pull off the vent line to get the fuel line to fit underneath the thermostat housing (it is zip-tied to the fuel line). When I pulled the vent line off the fuel pump, I noticed it was clogged...

Will my remote starter actually crank the engine?

With my remote starter hooked-up to the starter/solenoid directly, and the key in the ignition switch is turned ton, will the engine crank? Or, does the actual turning of the key enable the plugs and everything to fire? I’d like to be able to crank the engine while hovering over the engine bay...

Gasket sealer for new intake/exhaust manifold?

On my Volvo 3.0, I am putting a new intake/exhaust manifold and gasket on. The service manual waffles on if gasket sealer should be used. I just had the head redone by a machine shop, and the manifold is new, so there surfaces should be flat. What should I do?

Rebuilng Holley 2300 and I have some questions.

Hey guys, I’m rebuilding the Holley 2300 that is on my Volvo 3.0. I have a few questions. 1. The instructions say to “turn the idle limiter caps to its leanest position and remove the cap. Observe and record the initial position of the needle slot. Turn the needs until lightly seated, record...

Call for help, again. I’m putting the 3.0 back together.

As many of you know, I had issues with the 98 Volvo 3.0 I acquired. It had an exhaust leak and was seeing signs of a little water in the oil. Troubleshooting showed a blown head gasket and a cracked manifold. A leak down test showed air escaping out of the valves. A compression test showed...

How do you know when it is time to replace points, distributor cap, and rotor?

Is this something you do just because “it has been a while,” or is there a test or symptoms that can be used as a determinator? Also, a related question, the tune-up kit looks like it only contains the cap and rotor. Is that correct? I have searched and can not find just points.

To test compression, do i need to intall pushrods?

I want to do a compression test to see if the cylinder head job fixed my compression issue. If I am going to to have to remove the cylinder head, if the compression is not there, I would prefer to not waste time with installing the rest of the head. So, do I have to reinstall the push rods, set...

About to reinstall cylinder head. Any tips?

I had the cylinder heads off a GM 4cyl iron block marine engine worked by a machine shop. I am now ready to install it. I have a Fel-Pro head gasket and have cleaned the top of the block really well. What else do I need to do to properly reinstall the head? Should I do any cleaning of the bolt...

Anywhere to buy a GM 3l remanufactured short block?

I am preparing for all scenarios. Do you know anyone that sells remanufactured GM 3l short blocks? I am picking up my redone head Thursday. I am trying to get an idea of how fair the machine shop prices are if I get them to rebuild the motor. Or, I may go with a remanufactured short block from...

Is my block clean enough for a new head gasket?

I scrapped for an hour with a razor blade. Does it look clean enough? If not, what should I use? Also, what should I use as a straight edge to make sure the block is not warped?

Are all head gaskets created equal?

I am about to order a new head gasket. Are they all pretty much the same? Any to avoid?

99 Volvo 3l, Bad compression, leak down tests shows valve blow-by, pictures inside

My manifold had a crack in it causing water intrusion. The first compression test shows erroneous results; some cylinders with no compression. The second compression tests showed cylinder one 80/90, cylinder two 140/150, cylinder three 95/100, and cylinder four 90/159. That?s dry/wet numbers. I...

Volvo 3l. Trying to find TDC. Starter turns engine over too much to land on TDC.

As the title says, I can't see how it is possible to get a socket on the crank nut, with the engine in the boat, to find TDC. Am I missing something? I am using a remote starter.

A little water in oil. Should I run it to heat up the oil before oil change?

I had a cracked manifold that let a little water in the oil. Should I run it a bit to heat up the oil, or go ahead and change it cold? How many flushings should be sufficient? Do I need to change out the oil filter each time?
