    85HP Force Pump Housing Question

I'm replacing the impeller in my 85hp Force and noticed inside the top of the housing there looks to be some rubber from the old impeller on the inside walls of the housing. Would it be wise to take some very fine steel wool and clean it up a bit? Thanks
