68 OMC High Profile convert to Tru-Coarse

Has anyone converted or knows what it may take to change a push/pull steering on the older OMC Outdrives to a true coarse steering? Below is a picture of a 68 outdrive that has a small gear in the upper left (relation to the picture)corner of the upper gear case which I think indicates...

    Sea Water Pump

I see a number of Sea Water Pumps available. Anyone have handy the Mercruiser Part Number for a 1999 5.0. Is the Mercruiser pump the best way to go or are there as good or better aftermarket pumps available?

    Mercruiser Riser Star Tool

There is a large plug of the front of the riser. Manual mentions it is an inspection port of sorts. I want to take the plug out to get at a washer that is inside. Is there a standard tool to take this plug out with? Best description I can give is that is Star Shaped. 98 5.0 Mercruiser, Center Riser.

OMC My White Mongrel Boat Anchor

As I am now starting to put my Outdrive Back together in preperation for my new Sea Trials set for late August I wanted to share with all here the different parts I found and the year they were first or last used. This Sterndrive was attached to a 1974 SkipJack FB with a 1998 Mercruiser 5.0...

    OMC Ground Spring

Is there suppose to be a Spring directly under the Exhaust Housing Cover? I did not see one when I removed the cover and none listed in my parts catalogue or on BRP.COM. Does it exist or might I be confusing it with the Ground Spring that fits under the Worm Wheel. 1969-1977 Mongrel White Stringer.

    Replacing OMC Nuts and Bolts

I am nearing re-assembling my outdrive and want to avoid a problem next time I remove the drive. 1. Is it important I use OEM Bolts for the Exhaust Housing Cover and Pivot Caps that have to be replaced because of corrosion. 2. What if any coating can I use on the above bolts to avoid or...

    OMC Swivel Bearing Assembly

I am replacing the Swivel Bearing Assembly on the Lower Unit. After removing it I noticed the lack of a gasket I expected to see when I removed it. In its place was at best what I would describe was caulk. Has a rubber feel to it and is red in color. Although I have a new gasket on the way, I...

    OMC Ebay Good Deal Candidate

Found another choice candidate for my Best Deals on Ebay. BUT, got to wondering if the "Little Ding" as was mentioned really causes a problem. I myself would not care for it but does it matter? The Bid on this Beauty which is a complete Outdrive Vintage late 60's I imagine is $600.00. Have also...

Vacumn Cleaners: let the Fur Fly

I read a thread recently about using Vacumn Cleaners on a boat and particularly in the Bilge. After much Hand Ringing and talking to others on this board, I have decided to post here and see what happens. My preface for this is that there are Marine Alternators, Starters and the such that do...

    Rochester 2bbl Base Gasket

I thought I would find the Mercruiser Part# for the Gasket I need, but maybe not. Engine is a Mercruiser 5.0 98-99. Although I would like someone to tell me Gasket I need, I would also like to know if I can find other parts for this engine without the Serial# on Mercruiser site?

    Update 1975 OMC Stringer

Learning curve never seems to end. I am almost through with refurbing my Outdrive. I think OMC paid attention to how Volkswagon built there Bugs back in the 50's and 60's, making a number of parts interchangeable. So here is the history of what I have found: 1) Upper Gearcase is likely late...

OMC 1975 High Profile Upper Drive Shafts

As a summary Drive Shaft 35 fits into the bottom of Drive Shaft 47. Every thing as far as disassembly to replace the Impeller has been tough. Corrosion mostly from **** a## poor maintenance or lack of. The two drive shafts are not pulling apart which after what I have been through is not...

How important is a OMC Factory Manual

This thread is for the benefit of newcomers and others that depend on one or more supposedly credible sources other than the OEM Manual. Below is a picture of the Swivel Housing, Bearing Housing and Pinion gear assembly as depicted in my 1975 OMC Manual: Above is pretty much so what came...

    Fuel Line 98 5.0 Mercruiser

Below is from a recent thread quote about Fuel Lines from Bond-O. Did not want to Pirate the thread with my own question. It has been mentioned more than once, maybe even on this forum about using metal for fuel lines, in fear of the Rubber Hose melting in the event of a fire. What is the...

    Riser Gasket 98 Merc 5.0L

Ordered a pair of gaskets for the riser. The new ones appear to be paper type. Ones currently on riser have a Green Core. Do I need to re-order or can the ones I got be used properly?

    Swivel Housing 1975 OMC Stringer

This is a continuation of a previous thread. I am still trying to get the Swivel Housing off so I can replace the Impeller. Of the 4 Bolts I removed from the Housing, three were caked with what I suspect is dried Permatex and were dificult to get out and the 4th had very little on it and had...

    1975 OMC Stringer Impeller Replacement

 I am to the point now in my restoration project to replace the Impeller and Housing. I have read the section numerous times and I get the impression that I must remove the Upper Gearcase Top, Spur Gear, Worm Gear, True Coarse Gear, Ball Gear Assembly and Shaft, and Drain Oil just so I...

    Remote Filter Found

Have found a number of hidden items since I bought this SkipJack. A manual hand operated fuel pump under the deck, an Electrical Fish behind a Flybridge Panel and now some type of remote filter bolted under the Starboard Deck about two feet from the Engine. With my limited knowledge I guess it...
