    engine starts with starting fluid only

    we have a 1976 or 77 mercury 40hp 2 stroke 2 cyl engine. the engine does not start, we can get the engine to start using quick start. but the engine runs for 20 seconds then dies. we purchased a new fuel tank i mixed new gas and my first discovrey is by pulling the bowl insted of gasoline...
