69 Merc 1000 acts like 1/4 throttle at full throttle

I did a re-ring job on this powerhead last year, cleaned/kitted the carbs this spring, rebuilt 1 of the 2 fuel pumps, installed an aftermarket ignition box/coil, did the link-n-sync, and properly adjusted the timing. The motor starts instantly, idles smoothly, has great low speed response, and...

'69 Merc lower unit in forward and reverse at same time?

I pulled the lower unit off to replace the water pump impeller and couldn't remember which way to turn the shift shaft to get it into forward. I found that no matter which way the shaft was turned, the prop shaft ratcheted one way and not the other. This seemed odd to me as I expected the shaft...

    Do the pistons really interchange?

I've been given a '67-69 (?) 65HP merc that's good as a parts motor only. From external examination, it looks just like my Merc 1000 except that it's got 2 fewer spark plugs. The guy that gave it to me tells me that the pistons and reeds are interchangeable with my '69 100HP merc. Can anyone...

Another "WHAT YEAR" question - Merc...

    100 HP Merc, SN: 1465990

I tried to look it up at http://www.pfs-ware.com/kwast/merc_serial_number_reference_gui.htm but found the number was too low. Where do you guys go to look these numbers up?

2 HP Air Cooled Elgin oil

I'm about to become the owner of a 50's 2HP Elgin outboard. I'm wondering if I should use weed-whacker oil or TCW3 outboard oil. It's air cooled which leads me to believe air cooled oil would be better. Anybody care to comment?

69 100 HP Merc buys the farm...

    All,
Thank you for your help when my ignition system fried, but the guts of the motor couldn't keep up. I dismantled the powerhead today and found too many parts that are too far gone. :( If anyone needs some parts for one of these motors, I'll be parting this one out. Good parts...

Submerged OB, pulled back out, now what?

Perhaps this should go in the "stupid tricks" section but......

My boat (15' tri-hull, '69 100HP Merc) sank in 5 feet of water (don't ask  ). The outboard was submerged completely for about an hour before we managed to drag the boat up onto the shore. While the boat was under...

Merc Power Tune - What is it?

I've seen several posts refer to Merc Power Tune and other brands of similar products. What exactly is it? Methelyne Chloride? MEK? Stodard Solvent?

Who can do electrical peak voltage tests?

I'm looking for somebody in the Omaha area that has the neccessary test equipment to do a thorough diagnosis on my Merc ignition system. I should have the new switch box this week, but once it's installed, I need to make sure it's not going to fry again from some other component not doing what...

Why are rebuilt powerheads so expensive?

These motors aren't that complex, a piston set costs $100, machine shops charge $10 per hole to bore, and labor is probably less than 10 hours in a production environment. I'm trying to figure out how a powerhead can cost $2500 when the parts and labor come in at less than $500. Are the bearings...

Replace merc ignition with MSD 6-A box?

I'm finding it very frustrating to work on the original equipment ignition system after having TWO switch boxes burn up. Does anyone know if an automotive high-performance box such as the MSD 6-A or Accel 200+ ignition control box would read the signal correctly from the magnetic trigger? I...

    Convert to stern drive?

I'm about fed up to here (pointing above head) with my Merc outboard. Is it at all feasable to convert one of these things to a stern drive system with a motor I'm comfortable working on? Or am I just asking for a headache bigger than one head can hold?

    Fried Switchbox

I have a 1969 Merc1000 w/Thunderbolt II ignition (magnetic trigger, very expensive switchbox). I have fried it twice. The first time I didn't have the spark plugs in but the second time I did everything right. After I installed the replacement switchbox (used), the motor started and idled...
