8 hp four stroke won't start

I just picked up a 1999 8 HP four stroke ( E8RL4EEM )that will not start. It will crank over, has good spark, but will not start. I can pour a little fuel in the cylinders and it will hit a few strokes but won't catch and run. The origional owner said the motor has only been used a few times but...

    Transom corner cap 1988 V-180

Anyone have any idea where to find or what company made the transom corner cap for a 1988 V-180? This is the cast aluminum piece that sits on top and ties the transon to the side ( gunnel ). The one on the starboard side of my boat got knocked off. thanks.

    Exhaust Gasket replacement/ powerhead cleaning.

This morning I pulled the exhaust cover on a 1988 100HP Evinrude. The bottom end of the inside gasket behind the plate had deteriorated and was pretty much non-existant. I had been seeing oily leakage for some time. Two questions. Could a leak in that inside gasket have affected the vacuum and...

    Oily, dirty water leak

I have a 1988 100HP Evinrude that has developed a leak from the exhaust gasket or maybe the powerhead base gasket. The liquid is black and oily but is mostly water and accumulates on top and in the crevices behind the thermostat housing. It has progressively gotten worse over a few months. I can...

    Proper steps to maximize performance

I have a 100 HP Evinrude on an 18' Starcraft semi-vee, 800 lb. aluminum bass boat. After reading post on this site, and getting the engine running properly, I raised the motor two holes and removed a hydrofoil. This "freed" up the rig quite a bit and increased both speed and rpm's. However, I...

    Systems check compatable?

We have a 1997 Evinrude Intruder 150 which should be compatable with the OMC systems check gauge. However, it is mounted on 1990 bullet with a standard tach. Is there wiring that will come with a systems check gauge that will plug into the motor wiring harness?

    Upgrade prop or trim tabs?

After reading some excellent post on this site and the repair forum, I have raised my motor two holes, taken off a Stingray fin, and seen a world of improvement in performance. I have an Evinrude 100 XP on an 800 lb. hull ,18' Starcraft V-180 bass boat. The above, and clean carbs, has taken the...

Thicker head gaskets to lower compression

When my 1988 100XP was rebuilt the mechanic used "thicker" head gaskets to lower compression and compensate for lower octane unleaded gas. From what I am reading this was necessary on motors from 1985 and older that were set up for leaded gas. Since my manual states use of 87 octane unleaded...

    1988 Starcraft V180

I bought this boat new and absolutely love it as a bass fishing platfom. However, I have always had to use a fin on a 100 HP Evinrude to keep the boat from porpoising. I still have to keep it trimmed down way below level on the gauge. I have used a SST 21" and 23" pitch. If I trim it up for...

    Broken ring lodged in exhaust?

When a broken ring and piston was replaced in my 1988 100 HP Evinrude the pieces were not found in the cylinder or powerhead. A 1" piece of the piston between the two rings broke off as well as part of the lower ring. I heard it happen at idle and cut it off immediately. The engine was only spun...

    Lost 400-500 RPM's at wot

After 18 years of absolutely no problems with an 1988 Evinrude 100XP, problems are starting to arise. I had the engine rebuilt last year and it performed very well over the winter in Fla. I had some starting problems in April and mechanic replaced rectifier/regulator and highly recommended VRO...

    OMC XP, GT outboards

How do these motors differ from other models? I read on a search that the ports were larger and easier breathing. Is there anything else? Also, does an engine rebuild undo the XP/GT package? The mechanic said he used thicker head gaskets to lower the compression for poorer quality gas.

Evinrude 1988 100XP carburetor air intakes

I had some work done on the motor and got it back with the air intake extensions missing. I'm trying to get them back but that's another story. The extensions are about three inches long and bolt on to each side of the air intakes on the carburetor. The manual says not to run the engine without...

    Air leak/bubbles on VRO

What a find! Fantastic web site. I have a 1988 Evinrude 100 XP and there is moisture/bubbles coming from just above where the pulse hose fastens to the bottom of the VRO diaphram. It is not the hose/nipple connection. It is a molded plastic piece about 2" x 3/4" and about 1/2" thick. It is...
