    1971 1150 Lower Unit Refresh

Want reverse so I'm gonna tackle putting in new shift cam, cam follower, clutch and reverse gear to avoid the lottery of used lower units. Plus finding one with a 1.78 gear ratio might be tough and then I have to get into propping. I've read the manual and posts in the forum and it seems...

1971 1150 boggs with last bit of throttle

Any ideas...gets out of the hole fine, runs up and gets on plane and cruises fine. Starts easy, runs strong all day and plenty of power as with each bump in the throttle there is noticeabe increase in thrust. But...with about the last 1/2" to 3/4" of throttle movement (at the controls) it...

    1971 1150 Reverse Gear/Clutch

For the larger inlines are all 3 dog clutch and reverse gears interchangeable? I can't find any exact replacements (part #s) but all appear to use the same sliding clutch and straight toothed reverse gear. I found shift cam and cam follower. Gonna tackle this lower unit and get reverse back...

    1971 1150 with reg/rectifier-tach incorrect

Hey all, Just repowered from a 1969 merc 1000 to a 1971 1150. A 4 wire regulator/rectifier had been added in place of original rectifier. I had a newer quicksilver tach hooked up to merc 1000 by switching "signal" wire to yellow rectifier wire and tach read accurately. Did the same wire...

    Anode/Trim Tab-Painted??

Quick question. The previous owner repainted the mid section and painted the anode/trim tab. I know they're there to attract corrosion. Is the paint defeating the purpose??

Looking at buying 1972 Mercury 1150-Thoughts?

Had a 1969 Merc 1000 but #2 piston melted. Considering repairing myself but found a pretty decent deal on 1972 1150 with tilt/trim (Merc 1000 was manual and was considering looking for power tnt before melt down). Know my way around the Merc 1000 pretty well, any thoughts, advice, or issues to...

    Pistons for 1969 Merc 1000?

Burnt a hole in #2 piston last year. Gonna tear down and rebuild if not too much damage. Where do I get pistons? Haven't seen any available but have seen similar bore size (2.875"). Is there another year/hp I can use for reference? Thanks, Nick.

Well lets see...1969 merc 1000 Engine all on specs: timing, rebuilt carbs, rebuilt fuel pumps, new plugs, new wires & coil wire. Running last weekend just fine, started, purred along. While water skiing developed lean sneeze when trying to start and then wouldn't turn over. Choke, now turned...

Effects of 3 blade to 2 blade

Just out of curiosity... what are the effects on rpms if you switched from a 3 blade 17p to a 2 blade prop of the same pitch? or say you went from a 3 blade 17p to a 2 blade 15p? does the general increase of 200 rpm per inch still apply?

    Merc 1000-What is this??

I have this same motor but mine doesn't have this part that's inside the red box drawn on the picture. Just curious as to what it is and what it's for. Is it important? Thanks.

    Thunderbolt Ignition

I have a 1969 type II thunderbolt with single coil and pointless distributor. I was reading in some old ignition testing that a maintenance free battery is not recommended. I have a duel purpose starting/deep cycle battery. I'm wondering if that could have a major negative effect on my...

    1969 Merc 1000 Performance Reasonable?

Hello all, I've got a 1969 Merc 1000 pushing a 1969 Glastron V-163 (16.5 foot). I've done the full tune up, lync and sync, etc., and motor is running as good as I think it can. The original tach didn't work so I recently got a used newer quicksilver working with the minor wiring adjustment...

1969 Merc 1000 Shift Shaft Position

Hello all, At the controls, in the water I've got forward and neutral working properly but reverse doesn't seem to fully engage. When shifting into reverse the prop spins opposite way but just revs up, almost like neutral. Prop also changes direction on muffs in driveway. I've adjusted the...

    69 Mercury 1000-Reasonable Performance?

I've gotten to know quite a bit about old Mercury inlines in the last month and I've really taken a liking to them. I like the simplicity. Anyway I've been in boats all my life but I'm very new to owning one. So here's the question, does my performance seem reasonable? I'm good in the rpm range...

Hello all, I'm rebuilding my carbs and while they are soaking I'm looking over the throttle pickup/distributor to prepare for the link and sync. I recently bought this motor, my first, and after a couple ok test runs on the lake I'm just getting around to checking timing and other tuning. My...
