New bearings: too much movement on spindle

Despite what's seen in the photo they didn't seem compromised. Not brittle or leaking anywhere and tight on the caliper.

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

Yep, I ordered more sets than I needed, oops again  so need to return two of them. But at least the job is now done, finished it over the weekend. The caliper on the last wheel was a bear to get back on with new pads, not sure why; nothing appeared different about it from the others...

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

Yep, it's the 225 calipers. Ordering 4 sets of pads. I tested the piston over the weekend, definitely not seized.

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

I don't think the pistons are seized, but I'm going to check that when I'm at the boat's location again this weekend. From an earlier picture I took that has the other side of the caliper I can just make out the stamp, it's Kodiak. Sounds then like I have no choice on the brake pads but to get...

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

GA, are these clips 'generic', something I could pick up at an auto parts store, or are they specially shaped per manufacturer?

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

Still not sure what brand, but thinking this looks ver similar. It looks like the pad became separated from it's bracket. At the risk of this sounding like a dumb question, is my only choice to buy new pads, which would really mean I'd have to get new set for all 4 hubs? I didn't think going...

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

I must be losing my marbles. I could have sworn I put both races in. I even remember setting the outer race on top of the hub. I must have gotten distracted by a phone call or something and came back. What fooled me unfortunately were the two 'steps' in the inside of the hub that are roughly...

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

I wiped the remaining grease from the inside. It' now easy to see the seal and inner bearing. In the outer looking in pic, you can see the outer race flush up to the stop, and you can also clearly see the inner race and bearing. The part at 5 o'clock on the outer race is just little piece of...

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

Sorry, should have named the pics accordingly before I uploaded them on my other computer. IMG_0522 is looking from inner to outer, so you're looking directly at the seal. You can see the inner bearing behind it.

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

I'm actually not sure how to tell which brand- is it stamped into the hub somewhere?

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

You're not seeing the seal in that pic, it's the inner bearing (which obscures view of the seal), the grease around the edge may be making it appear like the seal.

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

Thanks for the replies all. Because it was the first time seeing it, I hadn't recognized the spindle in my other post had a deformed piece of the old outer bearing on it. The first hub had gone on fine with no play with the replacement races and bearings. Pics here are of this second hub...

New bearings: too much movement on spindle

My first experience replacing bearings & races on my double axle 3500lb trailer, my OP is here. Prior I had no knowledge or experience, so hoping what I'm seeing is not unusual. Replaced the races & bearings in the first hub, quickly discovered I need a lot more grease than a single tub &...

    Broken Spindle?

Thanks dwco, yes- I'm sure after doing one it will be silly not to do the other three. Won't be able to get to it for the next three weeks, but I cleaned it up and WDed it for now.

    Broken Spindle?

Is this because the race turning on the axle would mean the axle is scored and would then require replacement? Also, am I using the wrong term when I call what's in the first picture the spindle? What part is considered the axle? I'm assuming this is the worst case scenario (axle needs...

    Broken Spindle?

I trailered our boat into the driveway a month ago after pulling it for the season, and noticed the left rear wheel's grease cap was missing, and the wheel was tilted inwards at the top, as if it weren't completely attached to the axle. Over the past 12 years I only use it twice a season, once...

1998 150HP O/B (J150EXECD) stopped cranking- assume starter went bad?

I've had very little trouble with this motor for almost 10 years now, got a little bit lax on giving it a thorough tuneup over the past 3 seasons, which may have come back to bite me. Over the summer it's been starting a little harder from cold than in previous seasons- maybe needs a new fuel...

How to remove broken thermostat cover from powerhead?

Cooling system work over the weekend on my 1998 Johnson 150hp OceanRunner. I put in a new water pump, then went on to what should have been the easy part- or so I thought. I went to put in a new pair of thermostats. I thought the threaded plastic covers would come out real easy with an...

GS201: How to get access to gas tank & electrical?

I'm in the process of diagnosing the fuel gauge on my 1998 GS201, which stopped working near the end of last season. Haven't yet had a chance to test resistance of the sender on the wires connected to the gauge itself, will do so when I next have go to the boat's location. But if the problem...

    Whips vs mooring arms

I'm hoping someone with experience can comment on this subject. I have a 23' Hurricane Fundeck, and need to replace my whips, which are about 30 yrs old and probably a little too big for the boat. I'm considering replacing them with mooring arms instead of new whips, but don't know anyone...
