'85 Evinrude 140 VRO. Runs on choke but then dies

This thing has always had an issue with low speed operation. It has sat for a year. I pulled carbs, cleaned and used OEM carb kit to put it back together. Started first turn of the key. However, it dies when I close the choke. Any ideas of something I could look at before I drag it in to a shop?

    Brown/Tan rub rail insert.

My 2 year rebuild is coming to an end. ( http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=280191&highlight=matrex). Thanks to iBoats forum I had the confidence and support to tackle it. Rebuilt the transom, new stringers, floor etc. Every piece of wood in the boat is new. I am very happy with how it...

    Attaching seats to floor

Just finished cutting and dry fitting my floor. Last thing I want to do is drive screws into it - they caused many of this boats problems. But... I need to attach the front seats somehow. Any recommendations. These are essentially a box with a stringer across the front and back. They were simply...

Stringers - How much FG is enough?

Happy Spring All, My Doral Runabout project is back in gear now that the snow around the shed is gone! ( http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=280191 ) I have just put in the two main stringers. Each stringer is bedded in PL. I coated them completely with 2 coats of Epoxy, then used 6" FG...

    Air bubble in Tab fiberglass

Quick one... I tabbed my transom in. I guess I tried to cut the corner too tight - a couple of smallish (1 inch) air bubbles right at the floor/transom bend. My plan was to grind them out, fill with Peanut Butter and place a new layer of glass over the area... Right track?

crack in hull - need your expertise!

First timer and need help. I have ripped out my transom but am stopped until I know what to do to solve this problem. Crack in hull at bottom motor mount point. Water does penetrate. Removed rotten transom, and see that the materials the hull is made of have delaminated. What do you suggest is...

Motor mount height- is this normal?

I am taking my boat apart... taking pictures of everything as it comes off. I just noticed that the motor seems mounted very high to my inexperienced eye. Just looking at the way the mount is made I would have expected the bracket hook to wrap directly over the transom - this seems so high...

Removing Evinrude 140 VRO control cables to lift motor

I have a 86 Evinrude 140 - 4 Cyl VRO - IU need to pull it off to replace the transom. I have the shop manual but it does not show or tell how to remove the controls. I removed the gas connections at the tank. Any suggestions for the other components? VRO? Can I just pop off the oil line at the...

    Supporting floor at hull

Looking at the old floor coming up it looks like the original wood was ground down to fit above the curves of the hull. It is attached to the stringers and glassed in to the hull but has no support under the edges at the hull. Is that normal or should I be putting something under the edges? I...

Floor, Stringer & Transom Replacement - 85 Doral TRX

I bought my first boat this summer. Rookie mistake #1 (there have been many): I bought it without bringing a boat-savvy friend. Anyway, found out that A) it leaks through the transom and B) the floor was rotten in the back. Looks like the previous owner knew there were problems. He had peeled...

    Floor replacement Project at hand

I bought my first boat this summer, a little 1985 Doral runabout. Well, I had no idea what I should be looking for when I bought it, and after reading many posts in this forum I realize that that spongy feeling in the back corner or the floor is probably not a good thing. Well, this weekend I...
