    what is the correct way to remove shift lever

    Need to remove shift lever so I can get panel off. Merc 470, shifter has HI-LEX on the plastic cap. On the handle there is a tilt trim toggle, but there also seems to be a tilt toggle on the panel along side the handle. Can I just cut the wires and splice later to remove? Thanks for your help
