    Alternator Question

    I just installed a factory alternator coil and regulator on a 1993 Nissan 8hp for charging the battery. Does this now mean that a battery MUST be connected while the motor runs as is the case with a car alternator? Can I just start it up hooked to a volt meter to check operation?
