    Waterlogged foam?

The waterline stripe looks to be original and is awfully close to the cutout. Also looks like the motorwell is fairly deep. Maybe that was how they were built back then. Make sure the well is well sealed! How heavy is the kicker? Does it get on plane easily? If not, I might suggest a pair of tabs.

    Chain worth it?

Our 34 footer weighs 12K and I was in a similar situation. The windlass only takes 5/8” double braid, so instead of replacing it I simply got a bigger anchor. The old 22# Delta was sized correctly for the boat but I was uncomfortable after an overnight where a stiff breeze was blowing into the...

No water coming out of the exhaust on muffs

I’m not a fan of those single flow muffs. I prefer the dual flow style like this because they flow 2X the water.

2001 BMW Z3 battery runs down after 3 weeks.

They shouldn’t. I‘ve had a 2001 BMW 530i for 21 years and never had a parasitic drain. Does the Z3 have an underhood light- maybe the mercury switch went bad…. The other thing to consider would be the new battery- I had one a few years back that was bad from the factory; as a matter of fact, had...

    Boat exhaust prep

Best advice I can offer is: measure twice (or more) and cut smaller than needed. I’m a carpenter and know how to layout and measure. Long time ago I installed a set of Corsa exhaust diverters on my 23 Nova with a smallblock. I was super careful measuring and decided to drill only pilot holes...

    Boating the Upper Chesapeake

I’ve had a slip here for 25 years. They dredge the entire marina and entrance channel about every 7-8 years to a depth of 5’ MLW. Last time was early 2022. Blowout tides do happen here and can reduce depths significantly. Fortunately the bottom is soft mud so there’s not much to worry about-...

what bimini top should i get for my boat??

Re: what bimini top should i get for my boat?? Yup, a custom-fit bimini will be expensive but if you don't need side curtains, a 'semi-custom' off-the-shelf bimini can be bought from iboats. Just measure the size you need, then select the color and fabric desired. If there's no mounting...

Fat guys in a little boat

Re: Fat guys in a little boat I agree with EZ and roscoe- go with at least a 14 footer, preferably a widebody. It'll easily fit into a standard garage with room to spare. Here's a shot of my 1448 BigJon hauling 400# of trash. Note how close the bow is to the water. The boat was overloaded by...

    Wellcraft 23 Nova project

1985 model, 260 Merc/Alpha. Re-powered 1997. I bought this boat last year but only in the past couple months found the time/energy to make real progress. Background: I owned the same year/model boat for 18 years but sold it in 2004 to go bigger. Long story short, I got this one for the right...

    Wife: "You did WHAT...?!!!"

Yup, I bought another boat! I just can't help it- this hobby is SO addictive. Saturday I picked up a 1985 Wellcraft 23 Nova XL in Virginia. It's definitely a project but's 100% complete and IMO a good candidate for restoration. It was repowered in 1997- Merc 260/Alpha. I didn't buy the trailer...

How do I rig a temp gas tank?

I'm considering the purchase of a project boat with a 260 Mercruiser. It's been sitting unused for the past 3 years so I KNOW the gas that's in the 80 gallon tank is bad. I'll only buy if I can test-run it, so what's the best way to hookup a temporary fuel supply? I'd like to rig a 5 gallon...
