I have a 1974 Mercury 850 Serial #4100979
has the Thunderbolt battery CD ignition, with the trigger in the distributor. I was wondering if it was possible to use a Distributor-Magneto Setup from a Eariler 4 cylinder Mercury 4 Cylinder (Mark 30?) in place of the existing...
I have heard a few bits here and ther about using an Automotive style Alternator (spark shielded 1-wire inboard alternator perhaps) but there was discussion about pulleys and side loading the top crankshaft bearing, so i started thinking about it, what if the alternator were mounted above the...
I have a 1974 mercury 850 (85 HP) serial # 4100979
I was wondering how long the ignition system on this motor could run from the battery?
I have a bad stator on my outboard and since I have the whole winter and nothing to lose I was thinking of re-winding it myself, it's off a '74 merc and only charges the battery, so it seems pretty straightfoward, anybody ever tried this before or have any suggestions on it?
Where is the best place to get a replacement stator? (Aftermarket, OEM, etc..) I have a 1974 Mercury 850 (85HP) with CDI ignition, it has the 2 lead battery charging-only stator, also, does anybody know the how many amps this one produces?
I have a merc 850 with a belt driven distributor, the stator does nothing but charge the battery on this model, so i don't see why I would have to have all these conversions done. Could I not just rob the distributor from an earlier model, and set everything up like a traditional ignition circuit?
I have a 1974 Mercury 850 (85 HP), and I am wondering if, in the intrest of simplicity, if it is possible to convert from the factory equipped "Thunderbolt" (electronic) CDI
ignition to an earlier "points" ignition? and if so what parts I would need to scavenge for?

Thanks in...
