Meet the Sea Buzzard! 20' Monark project.

Re: Meet the Sea Buzzard! 20' Monark project. Got the trailer sanded and painted, bunks replaced, and pontoon framework reassembled. Working on the flooring right now. I'm applying a couple of coats of oil based porch paint to the underside before installing. I'll paint the top side once...

Bolts or Self tapping screws for installing wood floor?

Which is best? Pontoon stuff has them both. Screws are $20 less and would install much faster, but are xylon coated rather than SS. Cant think of any advantages of the bolts other than they are SS might be easier to remove when it comes time to replace the floor again.

    Something is inside my pontoons.

I noticed something very large banging around inside the pontoons while picking them up to put back on the trailer. Just wondering what it could be. Maybe a ballast tank of some sort in case of a catastrophic leak? It doesn't seem to be moving around freely. It's like its attached to...

    SS vs. galvanized hardware

During disassembly of the boat and trailer, I came across a lot of rusty nuts and bolts. I decided that I would replace everything that was rusty with SS hardware. Now I'm wondering if this might be overkill, especially since the SS hardware is considerably more expensive. I will definitely...

Meet the Sea Buzzard! 20' Monark project.

Re: Meet the Sea Buzzard! 20' Monark project. Made some more progress. Finished stripping the boat and trailer. Fresh paint on trailer. I ordered some stainless hardware to attach the new bunks to the trailer. Just need to pick up some carpet and stainless staples and hopefully will be...

Considering buying a Southwind 201 L hybrid pontoon

Re: Considering buying a Southwind 201 L hybrid pontoon I sold this one last year due to lack of use. It was an awesome boat and I wish I still had it, but it was too much $$$ just to have sitting under the shed. It was a 19' with a 115 4 stroke. It would do about 40 MPH with 2 adults and 2...

    Replacing bunks. 2x6 or 2x4?

I've removed the crappy composite 2x6 bunks that were on my trailer and am ready to buy some 20' treated lumber to replace them with. A lot of the trailers that I've seen only use a 2x4 for the bunks rather than a 2x6. Is the 2x6 necessary? Also, are galvanized carriage bolts preferable over...

    Outboard removal

Re: Outboard removal Got the motor off with no problems. I was able to create a lifting eye out of a $12 bolt puller kit and an eye bolt. I bought a 500 lb ratcheting hoist for $40 and attached it to my garage rafters. Thanks again for the advice.

    Outboard removal

I will be attempting to move my outboard from the pontoon to the stand that I just built for it. Just wondering it there are any tips that may help me avoid anything disasterous. My plan is to either somehow attach the motor to the bucket of the tractor and lift it with that, or pull it up...

Meet the Sea Buzzard! 20' Monark project.

Re: Meet the Sea Buzzard! 20' Monark project. Found a guy down the road who welds aluminum. He patched up all four welds where the bracked attaches to the rear of the pontoons. They were all leaking. I got some Aluminex at Academy a few weeks ago and decided to try it last night. Seems to...

Meet the Sea Buzzard! 20' Monark project.

Re: Meet the Sea Buzzard! 20' Monark project. Made a little progress today. Furniture was practically falling apart in my hands. Got all of it removed, along with the carpet. Plywood is in fair shape. There is one spot up front there the top layer of wood is peeling off, then a spot...

Meet the Sea Buzzard! 20' Monark project.

After selling my Hurricane last year, I've been searching for a pontoon project boat to fix up. Finally picked up this beauty today. It's an 89 Monark with Merc 60. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions as we go along. The plan is to completely strip the interior, give everything a good...

Adding Yamaha Ring Free to old-ish gas

Got my boat about three months ago and have been topping off the gas tank after each trip. Tank was full when I got it. To my knowledge, there has never been any additive put in the tank. I don't think the PO had put any in the full tank that came with the boat. I have only been able to get...

How bad does your lake get on holiday weekends?

Was wanting to take the boat out this weekend, but my wife nixed that idea due to the amount of drunks that will be out. I really couldn't argue much, due in part to our lack of experience on the water. I really don't think it would be a good idea for us. I think we are just going to drive to...

    Texas PFD requirements question

"(c) The operator of a class A or class 1 motorboat, while underway, shall require every passenger under 13 years of age to wear a life preserver of the sort prescribed by the regulations of the commandant of the Coast Guard. A life belt or ring buoy does not satisfy this requirement." Taken...

    Snap fastner pliers

Can anyone recommend a good source for a pair of snap fastner pliers? The PO of my boat left a snap fastner kit in the boat for me, but the pliers have one of the handles broken completely off. The only ones that I have found in stores are just about the exact same pair, which I would like to...

Should I get a different battery?

*** New Boater Disclaimer *** Currently I have a battery that is from 2006. The label says PowerVolt Max Cranking Amps, with no additional info anywhere on the battery. My boat is pre wired for a second battery. I took the boat out for the first time this past weekend. Because I was unsure...

Trim gauge does not seem to be working.

I'll start off by saying that I am now to boats, so maybe that will help with any responses that I may get to this question. While out in the boat for the first time today, I noticed that my trim gauge stays in the top 1/4 of the gauge, no matter where I have the motor. I am assuming that the...

First boat outing this Saturday....need some loading tips?

So we are finally getting to take the new to us Hurricane to the lake this weekend after picking it up 3 weeks ago. This will be our fist boating experience and I'm just looking for some last-minute tips. I have a lot of concern about trailering the boat once we are finished. We will have our...
