Cleaning the Gas Tank on the '48 Scottie

I'm trying to clean the interior of the self-contained gas tank on my '48 Scottie. I tried acetone but it didn't cut the old oil/gas crud. It's not real bad in there but I'd like to get it nice and clean. Will rubbing alcohol work better?? Any suggestions?? Thanks!!

Prop has too much play - need new shear pin??

I've put the lower unit back together on my '48 Scottie. The shear pin is ok but when I put the prop on and tighten the cap, it seems like there is too much play. I believe the shear pin has worn over the years and I need one that has a larger diameter, though not much. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Epoxy coating inside a gas tank

I've seen some discussion involving coating the inside of an outboard gas tank. My '48 Scottie has a self contained gas tank. Is it a good idea to coat it and what product would you recommend? Thanks.

    New 12-14' Boat Trailer - $200!!

A friend e-mailed the other day and forwarded a post from a Smith Mountain Lake fishing forum. Gander Mountain has 5 12-14' boat trailers that have a defective coupler. They were attached too far back on the tongue when they welded them; thus, the coupler would not attach to a ball. They are...

    1948 Scottie Carb

I pulled the carb off the '48 Scottie and cleaned it. Question - The screw on the very top of the carb - is that an adjustment screw? It was turned in all the way. And the screw with the spring on the front, the idle screw? Any other adjustments? Thanks!! [/IMG]

A cold day on Holliday Lake, Virginia

I took my son and his friend fishing on Holliday Lake near Appomattox, VA. We were trolling for Pickerel on a 35F day. We didn't catch any pickerel but Josh caught 2 jumbo perch and my son Jared caught 1. They were beauties. They caught them with small plastic grubs, trolling at slow...

Pulling the flywheel on the Scott-Atwater

I am ready to pull the flywheel off the Scott-Atwater but believe I will need a puller. Am I correct? I didn't see anything about this in the online manual that I found. Here is a pic. I tried to tap it lightly with a rubber mallet - all around on the bottom of it. Thanks.

    1948 Scott-Atwater Online manuals, etc

It's time to start working on the 1948 Scottie. I had links from Imported Skippy but his comments have all been deleted..... Anyone help out there? I plan on pulling the flywheel to check the points and want to clean the carb. Can I clean the carb well enough without removing it? Also will be...

    Sea King Splashed!!

We finally finished the Sea King yesterday and splashed it this morning. It took a lot of work and had a few setbacks. I had to have a new transom cap made and it's aluminum gutter material. Not quite thick enough but it works for now. The Sea King did not leak!! Thanks Gluvit!! I took the two...

    Build a floor for my 12' V-Hull

I want to build a floor in the Sea King but want to keep it low on the floor. I am not a carpenter.... But can build basic stuff. How do I figure out the "pattern" for the floor, i.e. to follow the curve and slope of the boat and keep it level? Thanks!! :D

How much paint thinner with Rust-Oleum??

I am going to use Rust-Oleum Professional Oil Based paint for my aluminum boat. I will use the roll and tip method. Question - How much paint thinner should I use (proportions). I know the paint is thick and not real easy to apply. With thinning will a quart be enough?? For 2 coats? I am going...

    Prepping the Sea King

I sanded the outside of the hull tonight and about 1/2 of the inside. I sanded the back of the stern to bare metal; easy to do because it's flat. :) I found it impractical and difficult to attempt to sand the hull to bare metal. The old Sea King has too many uneven surfaces. I did read that...

    Started the 1948 Scott-Atwater!!

I bought some fresh gas and oil (mixed 24:1) for the 1948 Scott-Atwater this morning and set it up on a "stand". This is the motor my Dad had setting in his back room for years. It had been many years since we started it. I pushed in the choke and started pulling. It popped a few times and...
