    454 bravo backfires when hot

    New motor, coil, wires, plugs, ign sensor in distributor. Motor idles like a champ. Runs good for about 45min then all it will do is idle anything over 2500 rpm it spits spurts and backfires.     420hp 454 backfiring at 3500 rpm

    454 bravo one new longblock with 2 he's on it. Anything about 3500rpm it misses and pops. Idle it runs great. Im thinking timing any insight would be great.

    I just put a new long block in my boat and I know you should use zinc in your oil but im wondering if mercruiser oil has zinc or if I should add some.

    454 bravo 1 thermo postion

    ATTN DON S. This is to let you know that putting the thermo on top of that sleeve in the old houseing does make a diiference in overheating. I put it in correctly and it runs great now. No overheat problems. Thanks for you insight. This forum has helped me greatly replaceing my block myself...

    thermostat postion

    I have a 1988 454 bravo one with the old style thermo houseing. If the thermostat is put in on top of the brass sleeve (the flange was up i beleive its supposed to go down) instead of under it will that cause the motor and risers to get hot.
