    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

Yes it does. You survived, the motor clearly kept going and I assume the boat did as well. Call that a win! A friend of mine dunked his 15hp in the river one year. Had the safety loop on so it killed it before getting into too much water. Pulled it up by the fuel line, got back to his...

I hope that wasn't part of the plan!

    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

I don't know how to link to a specific post in a thread but found # 18 here to be very informative. Sounds like this a continuation of what you posted above jimboo. Maybe the motor isn't too low then because of the gearcase design...

    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

Mine only has the 3 bench seats as well but the rear bench is much deeper than the front 2. We'll get swells like that on the bigger lakes (namely Winnipesaukee) but it takes a special day. No way I would want to be out on that in the 14' either.

I brought the prop with me to work today so it's sitting on my desk. I don't see any filing and it doesn't appear bent, although I've never really looked at a prop in much detail before. We're leaving Saturday for vacation and bringing the boat. Unfortunately I won't have enough time this week...

    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

Very informative! I do believe mine (1984) was a transition year as I've seen several references to the 79-84 as being a non-thru-hub exhaust and the 85-90 something as being thru-hub. The main water intake is behind the prop too so muffs can't be used. I replaced the screen and then tapped the...

    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

I haven't toughed the prop, aside from removing it for rebuilding the lower unit. Is filing a common practice? I didn't have a chance to make it to the marina at lunch today so will try tomorrow. Even if it's just for figuring out if it's close to being the correct prop, pitch, etc.

    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

Thanks Jimbo, I guess I should have been more specific. Is it worth investigating a spun hub? Seems they're pressed together but I can press them apart for inspection if you think it's worth while. Not that I'm going to buy another outboard because of this, but would a 10, 20, etc. year newer...

By "losing it's bite" do you mean spinning relative to the inner hub section? Regarding lack of performance, are you saying that this should be expected?

    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

jimmbo, I was fearful of mounting the jack plate and the motor being too high. Currently the CAV plate is ~1/2" below. I could try shimming it up to make it even. If it needs to go higher I'd likely remove the jackplate and move it up a set of hole. I believe they're spaced 1". It sounded like...

    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

Got the boat out for a test run yesterday and it performed much better than the initial trial. No water spray at the stern and got up onto plane quicker. One thing I did notice though was that once on plane if I gave it a lot of throttle the engine speed increased but it didn't seem to pickup...

The jack plate is due in Friday. Hope to have it installed and sealed up that night so I can test it Saturday or Sunday. I'll report back then. Thanks again!

    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

I thought about doing this as well but then saw some talk about jack plates. So far I haven't invested a lot into this setup so but this seems important (Ha) so I ended up ordering a TH Mini Jacker plate. This should solve my problem although will put more holes in the transom. Oh well. Next...

    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

Yes, the strap was only temporary as I'm doing this by myself and can't hold, adjust and take measurements at the same time. I don't see why what I described in post 12 won't work. It's the same concept as a transom extender, just beefed up. Edit: Meant to include that if I lowered the motor...

    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

Apologies, I'm apparently not getting email notifications of activity. I was planning on keeping the wood block there (after it's sealed), and run a plate (Think I've got some 3/16" SS) on the inside and outside covering the top of the transom and the support block. I'll also have a piece of...

    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

Thanks racerone. I ripper a rough cut block down to 2x2" to match the transom. Cav plate is about 3/4" lower than the bottom now. I don't think it can be tested as is so I'll just mark it and start drilling.

    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

I've mostly seen that the Cav plate should be flush to 1" below the bottom of the boat. Should I not just target this right from the start with a 2" spacer? Even with a 1" spacer, I won't be able to clamp the motor down well for trials, so I'd like to get this as close to correct as possible...

    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

I didn't see a way to edit so will add another post. Edit: I did have the boat out yesterday and there was water spray coming over the transom so I do think the motor needs raising. The boat was pulling left too some but I didn't see any trim tab. Seems that wasn't a feature on this years...

    1984 Evinrude 25hp mounting

Hi all, I have been fixing up the subject outboard (with help from this site) as well as a 1981 Mirrocraft 14'. I got the long shaft motor for pretty cheap so when I was replacing the transom on the boat I updated it from 15 --> 20". Well apparently it should be 22" because my cavitation...

84 Evinrude 25hp Link and Sync clarification

I apologize for the late response. I never received an email notification. I changed the stop adjustment back and will try to run in a barrell tonight. First thing I noticed is in the idle position the roller is maybe 5/8" away (port-side) from the 2 marks (Roller Idle). Also the Carb...
