How to tell if outboard is salt or freshwater

I bought a pontoon that came with 1980 Mercury 80EL outbaord. I know it has been used exclusively in freshwater but I wanted to know how to identify it as either freshwater or saltwater outboard or even if there was a differentiation in the motors back in 1980. Thanks for the help.

    Smoke in Carbs on shutoff

OK, I'll try to be brief. The issue is that when my 1980 Mercury 800EL 80hp 2-stroke 4-cylinder is turned off after a couple minutes of running, exhaust can be seen coming back out through the carburetor throat. Is this normal or indicative of bad reeds?

Exhaust coming from carbs and stator question

I bought a pontoon and it came with an '80 80HP Mercury 800 2-stroke 4-cyl. It's always able to start although it takes a good amount of starts before it runs. When it's idling, it runs rough. They didn't appear to be all that dirty but the gaskets got replaced and everything was scrubbed down and degunked. After reinstalling the carbs I noticed that the lower...

    1981 Mercury 80HP 4-Cyl 2-Stroke Compression Range

Is there anyone by chance that happens to know what the acceptable range on a compression test a 1981 Mercury 80hp, 4-Cyl, 2-stroke is? I just got this engine w/ a boat and am trying to make sure the engine is up to par and tuning. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

    Pontoon Replacement?

I just bought a 1971 MonArk 24ft Pontoon boat w/ trailer and motor (for cheap) and started looking over all the things that I need/want to replace. The pontoons are in pretty rough shape. They do not appear to have been punctured but someone has obviously hit a few logs, stumps, and docks in the...
