I have a 30ft pontoon boat with a 3.0 mercrusier and once i installed the rebuilt engine, we tried to stab the lowerunit into place. It didnt go. The shifter was in foward gear and the lower unit was in foward gear so that i could align the splines from the lower unit with the motor the spines...
