Replacing Risers/Elbows and Exhaust Manifolds on a Ford/OMC Cobra 5.8 Ltr

You were right! There is a hose port on the side, about the same place it was on the OEM manifold. Now I just need a fitting to screw into the port that will attach to the hose. Headed to the hardware store now ...

Replacing Risers/Elbows and Exhaust Manifolds on a Ford/OMC Cobra 5.8 Ltr

Lou or anyone. I see that you: "First thing I did with my Barr conversion. After I took the paint off, they were just about perfect…" I also have Barr manifolds. I am cleaning off the paint from the mating surfaces. That is a lot of work with a sanding block and a paint scraper!! What did you...

What is the Best Way to Repair the Snaps on a Sunbrella Cover

There are a lot of missing snaps, so I'd prefer not to have to sew on a doubler. There should be a strong adhesive that I can use to attach a doubler. Anyone want to make a suggestion?

What is the Best Way to Repair the Snaps on a Sunbrella Cover

The boat comes with a very well made cover that snaps onto the boat in many places. A lot of the snaps have torn out of the cover. I'd like to add small doublers and then use my snap kit to add new snaps. I tried using iron on patches but they do not stick to the Sunbrella fablic. Any...

Replacing Risers/Elbows and Exhaust Manifolds on a Ford/OMC Cobra 5.8 Ltr

Sounds like you used a generic hose and not one shaped for this application. I could use the existing hose, which would get me 2/3 of the way there and then add a straight section to go the extra 8 inches to the opening, then a 90 deg. fitting going into the manifold. Because the existing hose...

Replacing Risers/Elbows and Exhaust Manifolds on a Ford/OMC Cobra 5.8 Ltr

Thanks Lou. Did you have to change the hose from the thermostat housing to the manifolds?

Replacing Risers/Elbows and Exhaust Manifolds on a Ford/OMC Cobra 5.8 Ltr

Here is a picture of one of my exhaust manifolds and a Barr manifold I can get tomorrow. See the discussion above about the differences:

Replacing Risers/Elbows and Exhaust Manifolds on a Ford/OMC Cobra 5.8 Ltr

I have been able to get the old gaskets off the heads. There is another post on just that. I have located new exhaust manifolds by Barr for a good price. I will go to the shop tomorrow to be sure that they fit. I do know that they only use 4 mounting bolts. Mine has all 8 from left to right...

How do I Remove Very stuck on Exhaust Manifold Gaskets?

I was able to get all the gasket material off the engine block. Here was the method: 1) Vacuum all around the exhaust and the spark plug holes 2) Use the vacuum as a blower and blow out any debris 3) Block the exhaust ports with sponges cut to size 4) Block the spark plug holes with tubing and...

How do I Remove Very stuck on Exhaust Manifold Gaskets?

Just to be clear, I'm trying to get very old gasket material of the cylinder head not the exhaust manifolds. I plan on replacing the manifolds. Thanks for all the suggestions above. I will try a combination of all of them, I have PB Blaster Penetrating rust remover and I also have CRC Gasket...

How do I Remove Very stuck on Exhaust Manifold Gaskets?

I'm changing the exhaust manifolds. They came off easily, but the gaskets are really stuck on the engine block. They may be the original and 35 years old ! I've tried a hard plastic scraper and gasket removal spray. I have a one-sided razor, but I'm concerned about cutting into the metal. So...

Have you cleaned and resurfaced exhaust manifolds?

I'm going to replace the exhaust manifolds along with the risers. I cleaned them out as best I could by connecting a hose and blasting water through them while banging on them with a hammer. I then scrubbed as best I could with rust remover and a wire brush. I'm not satisfied. I'll get new...

Have you cleaned and resurfaced exhaust manifolds?

Good to know. Sounds like removing too much rust could make things worse. The right amount may be to only knock out the loose rust and leave the rest. All this may be moot. I may just replace the manifolds. I've been looking for them in lots of places.

What are the symptoms of cracks in an Exhaust Manifold?

How can you be sure that I would get water to enter the manifolds/cylinders? I can have the manifolds cleaned, resurfaced and pressure tested.

Have you cleaned and resurfaced exhaust manifolds?

This is on a Ford 5.8 Ltr with an OMC OD. Have you cleaned and resurfaced exhaust manifolds? I have a few other posts about this. The motor was running hot but only on the port side exhaust and riser. The engine temp was right in the middle. On removal, there was rust and a partial blockage in...

I'll find that Permatex gasket remover. Thanks for the tip.

Replacing Risers/Elbows and Exhaust Manifolds on a Ford/OMC Cobra 5.8 Ltr

Yes, I'd use the double nut method to remove them.

Replacing Risers/Elbows and Exhaust Manifolds on a Ford/OMC Cobra 5.8 Ltr

Bondo and Lou, thanks for the tips. Should I soak the gaskets with a Goo- Gone or something similar for a few days to soften them up prior to trying to remove them and cleaning up the surfaces? I could also start with a hard plastic scraper/putty knife and then only use a razor blade as...

Replacing Risers/Elbows and Exhaust Manifolds on a Ford/OMC Cobra 5.8 Ltr

Picture please. Wouldn't you have to be very careful not to go too deep and create a low spot that doesn't seal?
