    Starting point for idling/performance troubleshooting

Just changed oil and still have old oil in clear jug, no milkiness, no separation. New oil is a bit over full on the dipstick though, which I attribute to the replacement filter being smaller than the original. I did also have to replace the oil pressure switch, located near the oil filter...

    Starting point for idling/performance troubleshooting

I pulled and replaced plugs, wires, cap rotor and ignition sensor. Set idle and have it running pretty smooth between 600-700 rpm. When I advance the throttle, it "gasps" almost like a suction sound. (my first edit said bogs but the more I thought about it, more like a gasp) I wanted to try...

    Starting point for idling/performance troubleshooting

Thanks itsathepete, I like those as a starting point before I buy a bunch of parts. Will definitely change the fuel filter. I’ve owned boat 5 years and have had seasonally maintained by pros near me. Storage inside for winter. Serial 0D724261 I attempted pulling distributor cap over...

motor stall and odd electronic behavior

Boat: 20 foot Grady Overniter Engine- 4.3 MercCruiser Thunderbolt IV While returning to home dock from a recent outing, the boat stalled just near the dock. We were able to restart and power in to dock, but then we went away for 2 weeks. During the time we were gone there was heavy rain, so I...

    Searching dual console used boats

Hello forum, I am looking to buy a dual console, outboard boat. Style of a Grady white. Wellcraft Sportsman would work nice. What other boat makers offer similar models? I am shopping used only and recently came across a Key West and an Aquasport that had similar layout and features. What...

strange trim behavior or possibly just user error

Strange behavior or maybe my lack of knowledge today on the water test of my 1973 Starcraft with Mercruiser 140. The trim worked fine out of water, up down, no trouble. My console has three switches, do the top 2 need to be need to be depressed to raise the out drive? That is the only...

Wanted: best fitting cover for 18' Holiday available to buy from iboats.com?

I've tried a couple "universal" covers and they just don't seem to do the job for my 18' Holiday. Most seem better suited for an open bow and are not cut for the closed bow windshield position. Has anyone had luck finding a good fit somewhere without going custom cover for a Starcraft Holiday?

    trailer sway and wheel size

Have a 1973 dual axle trailer with 8 inch wheels. When I was towing last fall on the highway there was a significant amount of trailer movement left to right. Would larger wheels reduce that type of sway? Boat is aluminum, 18' with I/O. Thanks!

2nd opinion on shop advice for bellows replacement

Ok, so, my first I/O is a merc 3.0 from the 70's. It is presently at a well established shop for outdrive check up and steering work. In the course of the outdrive check it is discovered the gimbal bearing is bad. I ok the estimate for gimbal replacement. Last night I lose sleep because I...

in search top for Holiday 18' I/O

Looking for info on what the original canvas top might have looked like for my '72 Starcraft Holiday 18. Also, I have seen advertiments with an optional stern rail and ladder. Does anyone have photos of either?

suggestion for a cover for winter storage

I have a project boat that I want to cover for winter but don't want to break the bank just yet. I'll probably remove the seats and store those inside, floor is going to be replaced in spring. Any tips on a reasonably good economy cover? Snow load is heavy in normal winters. Boat is 18ft...

    starting point for project engine

Hello, Mercruiser forum. First time poster on this forum. I have just purchased a 1973 StarCraft that has been sitting, un-winterized for 5+ years in upstate NY. Engine is 120 hp, 4 cyl. I am looking for a beginning point to assess the engine because it does not have a starter so I can't try...
