    Hot water heater

It's been over a decade since I winterized a water heater. But it looks like the check valve is screwed into the hot outlet, should be in the cold inlet. Take a close look below where those hoses go into the heater. Should be a C and H stamped below them. If someone got things mixed up you can...

destroyed 2 gimbal bearing tools trying to dislodge a seized bearing. still stuck

Might want to use your gimbal bearing install tool and make sure the bearing is straight. I'm guessing you either cocked it when you first started pulling or the last install wasn't straight. I was a "lazy" tech. If the bearing didn't come out with a few slide hammer pulls, I would drive it back...

Crack on drive unit - how concerned should I be?

If you look closely right below the crack, there is a little 1/4" slot in the drive. That slot is there to drain the water out of the area where the crack is. My guess is that the drive hasn't been off in awhile or the last time it was, the person doing the service didn't know to check that area...

    Bizarre IAC reading

Are you sure 40 KNOTS? That boat would have had a speedometer that reads in MPH. Recordings might show an issue.

    Bizarre IAC reading

Diacom recording. Here is my recommendation on how to do the recording. Start with a cold engine and the boat in the water. 1. Connect Diacom 2. Turn on batt switch, turn on key switch -- but don't start engine 3. Start Diacom recording -- let run for 30 seconds to one minute 4. Start...

    Bizarre IAC reading

All the boat info is in my signature, Yes it is, looks like there is someone who should feel stupid --- me? --- sorry. At my age you would think I should know better. Or maybe that’s the problem? #3. yes, if it hasn’t been repropped. 25’ SSI w/6.2 should be about 50-55 MPH? Probably #1. Also...

    Bizarre IAC reading

You didn’t post a serial number or even a model number, but I see what looks like an ECM 555 in one of the pictures so I’ll take a guess. The MerCruiser PWM (pulse width modulatio) IAC is a great source of revenue for shops. I’m not sure why they cause so much trouble in marine applications...

    Malfunction indicator Light constant on

And I don’t want you to think I’m bad mouthing your Techmate. They are a great tool for certain situations. I will sometimes use one first for things like a MIL or check engine light. Boot time is very fast! And the screen is much easier to read in the sun. But people should know it’s...

    Malfunction indicator Light constant on

I would like to say Thank you for your service to our country. I’m sorry you have a lack of good dealers in your area. Volvo Penta does not have certified technicians. They grade their techs on levels. Higher levels will unlock more features of Vodia which Volvo Penta sells that a “good”...

    No black/yellow kill wire on 9.9. 4-stroke

Find the 4 pin connector on the electronic control unit. The brown wire is the kill. Should change to black/yellow before it goes to the stop switches. edit --- should have said disconnect it where it changes from brown to blk/yel

    Malfunction indicator Light constant on

If the light doesn't go off after 3 trips there is a problem. Nice picture of the dogs. Easy to tell which on is on lookout duty. But it might have been helpful to post a pic of the engine status panel with the light on. There should be two lights in it and they both can have somewhat different...

    No Trailer and Trim Up

There were two 3 button switch's. Early models you pushed just one button to trailer. The later required you to push two buttons at the same time to trailer. You are correct that the switch by the bell housing should be normally closed and open the circuit when the bell housing hits it. If I...

    Volvo Penta stiff steering

This is very common, each boat can be a little different. Has to do with what helm and steering rack is on the boat.

    Volvo Penta stiff steering

With the steering cable disconnected at the cylinder, the steering wheel should turn easily. Like one finger easy. Now disconnect the steering arm at the rack. Drive should move easily. These are just two things to try. You haven't told us what Volvo Penta transom plate you have. Serial number...

Outboard MARINER 75 ELPTO wont start

The yellow/red wire should go from key switch into the throttle and then out of the throttle to engine harness. Shouldn't go the gauges. Suggest you go to the engine and find the main harness. It will be by the starter and starter solenoid. You may need to remove the battery cables to get to it...
