    100+ outboards

I won a 2021 50hp Honda off eBay from a seller not 10 miles away for $55. It was listed by some old guy's widow who listed it for $1 and left it to bid. I totally did not expect to win it, I set a proxy bid of $101 and went to bed and woke up to a notice that I had won. I also fully expected the...

    100+ outboards

I've found the same thing here lately. Its not a matter of price, its a matter of no one wanting a boat or motor. I've seen some really nice motors and boats listed for free for months with no takers. All last year the water was devoid of boats here. Freshwater fishing is dead, I've not seen...

    1988 35hp - Multiple issues

I'll second that vote. I've had a few dozen or so older Mercury outboards here that just wouldn't budge. I left one 50hp sitting upside down with the lower unbolted and chained to an engine hoist, with the flywheel chained to a bar under the two front legs of the hoist. I soaked it almost daily...

    1988 35hp - Multiple issues

A buddy of mine did something like that, he attached the flywheel to an anchor pot in the shop floor and a chain to the lower unit attached to a chain winch hanging from a gantry crane. He applied a good amount of pressure, soaked it for a day or two, then when nothing moved he kept cranking on...

    1996 Mariner 9.9hp (Yamaha?)

I figured I'd come back here with an update, I bought the Mariner three weeks ago now. I ended up getting it for $1250 cash. It came with a fuel tank but I bought it a new hose, a fresh water pump, and I went through the carb just to be safe. The thing is basically a time capsule, I highly doubt...

    2003 Honda 9.9

I had a Honda a few years ago, it lost most of its paint on the cover in the first year. It blistered off in spots leaving it speckled in blue/silver and white where the paint was gone. I tried sanding it smooth but it just gummed up the sandpaper. I finally ground off the original paint with an...

    1996 Mariner 9.9hp (Yamaha?)

0H005277 was the number on one I looked at, the Yamaha pictured was listed as a T9.9ELRU, both were listed online locally. I have a Yamaha here with no numbers on it that also looks identical. There were two on CL real close to me that were listed for $1,200 cash but they sold before I could get...

    1996 Mariner 9.9hp (Yamaha?)

Are you saying that the whole thing is Mercury? The power head looks identical to a Yamaha. The carb, intake, flywheel, belt cover, sparkplugs, headgasket, water pump, and timing belt all are the same as the same year Yamaha.

    100+ outboards

There's a few reservoirs here and there in NJ and PA but for the most part if you can run a gas motor, it doesn't matter what type. One big issue is that many older boats have a tough time handling the added weight of a four stroke. For years I ran a 1970 14ft Starcraft Seafarer, rated to 25hp...

    1996 Mariner 9.9hp (Yamaha?)

I looked at a super clean 9.9hp Mariner, the tag is marked 1996, so the year is definite. Its on CL and looks super clean, the guys swears it was only run once or twice and put away. Its scratched up from being stored but under the hood it looks almost new. It starts first pull, one you...

    100+ outboards

I was helping a buddy look for a good used motor for his boat this weekend and there's definitely a shortage of good used affordable motors. When I say affordable I mean anything that doesn't require a bank loan. He's been looking for a reliable two stroke for a 16ft open boat that he mainly...

    100+ outboards

I see the same thing everywhere I go. Larger boats tend to have big new four strokes, mostly Yamaha motors here, but every last smaller boat has an older two stroke. Four strokes just aren't affordable enough yet for most guys. Me included. As long as my 1978 35hp keeps running strong, I'm not...

    Ideas for an old trailer?

A few things will dictate how much a trailer can carry. First off is the springs, usually by figuring out the width, thickness of each leaf, and how many leaves you can get a pretty good idea of how much each spring pack is rated for. Next is the spindle diameter or bearing size or combination...

Where did all the used boats and motors go?

There's not a ton of good used boats here either, and not many on the water either. There's a few on the weekends but during the week its like a scene from a horror movie where all the people have disappeared. I went the whole length of the river here on Wed, without seeing another boat going...

    Used 40hp two stroke value?

I already have it on my boat, I took it for a quick test run Sunday morning, then I came back, swapped to the other prop, and made a few cable adjustments and took it back out today. (the motor in the link posted before here isn't the one I bought, it looks to be the same year and model but...

    Fuel hose lifespan?

For me, in a small aluminum boat, I don't worry much about whether or not its marine grade hose or not, its a 3ft length of hose with a primer bulb. I've been through dozens of primer bulbs over the years. The older one's used to get soft and gummy then leak, the new stuff turns to stone. I just...

    Fuel hose lifespan?

All the Moeller fuel lines I've seen around me here are silver or gray? The OEM J-E lines were gray, now they're black and made in China. The older gray style was a two part line, sort of a soft gray outer casing around a harder inner line. The inner line almost felt like PEX tubing it was so...

    Outboard Lock Recommendations?

Around these parts the age of the motor doesn't seem to matter much, most will buy any good running motor if the price is right or simply affordable. I'd venture to guess that more than half the motors I see out on the water are over 30 years old, many over 40, including my own, a 1979 Johnson...

    Used 40hp two stroke value?

When I bought my Mirrocraft Lake Fisherman 16, the original owner had replaced the original motor back in 1984 with a 25hp with electric start, he sold me the boat, and the original motor which was hanging on a board nailed between two trees in the woods behind his house. It was full of bees...

    Used 40hp two stroke value?

How heavy is the Tohatsu? Side by side with my 35hp its 1/3 larger all around. Its more like the size of a 50hp Johnson or Evinrude. My main concern is whether or not I'll gain enough in performance with the added 10hp or so with the added weight. I found it listed at 130lbs somewhere online...
