    1968 20hp lower unit seals

Hello. I’m in the process of restoring a 68 mercury 20hp. The lower seals need to be replaced. I’m having a tough time finding instructional videos. Does anyone have a good resource? I’ve done similarly-sized Johnsons from roughly the same time period. Am I going to run into any...

Here’s a video attempting to show more. There’s less oil bubbling out now, but still bubbling out a bit.

    Lower unit 68 200 20hp

Hello. I’ve been working on a 1968 200. It’s finally nice enough to get outside and put some muffs on it. I’ve attached a picture, and within the red circle, I’m getting some oily bubbles. I’m also seeing oil coming from the holes right above the prop. Does this sound like I need to replace...

    Mercury 1968 200 20hp prop

It does have a red decal. What is the significance of that? I just picked this outboard up as a project a couple months ago for $80.

    Mercury 1968 200 20hp prop

Haven’t been able to find anything. Maybe a better question is this. I’ve fixed the starter solenoid, fuel pump, impeller, lower seals, fuel lines, some electrical issues, some carb issues, and recoil. It’s starts and runs great now. Is it worth a $200 prop?

    Mercury 1968 200 20hp prop

Hello. I’m having a tough time finding a prop. A couple of shops have looked and all they can find are around $200. Does anyone have a lead on a prop for less money that would fit this outboard? My current prop has damage and it’s spun out. It’s a 68 merc 200 20hp Thank you.

I got a tachometer sensor today. Anyone know what the recommended low idle rpm is in addition to the previous questions I posted?

    Throttle shaft

Also, I’m going to pressure test the lower unit. How much pressure should that hold and for how long? I’m just wanting to test as much as possible before loading the parts cannon

    Throttle shaft

How much pressure should an inlet needle valve be able to hold? I have a pressure tester, so I might as well take a look.

    Throttle shaft

Thanks. I’ll order a needle valve and float. Regardless of the overflow condition, should I be concerned at all that gas can even go down the throttle shaft, or is that normal?

    Throttle shaft

Hello. I have a 68 200 (20hp). It’s dripping some gas from the throttle shaft. I took apart the carb. There’s no o-ring or anything to prevent fuel from leaking down the shaft, and there’s a bit of play in the shaft. How can I prevent fuel from leaking down there? Also, I have this set to...

1987 mercury 115 bogs after full throttle

Depending on what you find with the primer bulb test, you could also try to choke the engine as a separate test to see if there's a carb issue.

electrical and tilt lock: 1968 mercury 200

This was my assumption, but wanted to confirm with a proper wiring diagram. Any ideas where I can find an accurate one? I found a website with lots of wiring diagrams. Which of the ones from the attachment do you think would be correct? Here's where my confusion comes in. I can start this...

electrical and tilt lock: 1968 mercury 200

Hello. Does the 68 Mercury 200 have a battery charging system? Is the attached wiring diagram correct? I'm having a tough time finding a diagram that I can confirm is the correct one. I'm trying to use this as a tiller with the remote box, so I want to install a push-button starter switch...

    1968 200 20hp

Hello. I’m looking to rebuild the fuel pump In this 1968 merc 200. Every kit I look to buy has multiple diaphragms, but the fuel pump only had one diaphragm when I took it apart. Does the fuel pump need just the one diaphragm? And what is a good resource for buying the correct fuel pump kit?

    fuel pump poor idling

Update. Found a zip-tie hose clamp that wasn’t clamping at all. Putting an actual hose clamp on fixed the air issue. The idling issue turned out to be that the idle adjustment knob, part number 387272, is broken. I was trying to idle it at a level so low that it would never be able to idle...

    fuel pump poor idling

Hello. I have a 79 15hp, 15r79e. I had to change fuel lines from the fuel pump to the carb. The new fuel line is blue, and I can see through it. With the new line, I noticed that there's air coming from the fuel pump outlet. So, I bought a fuel pump rebuild kit....and there's still air. I...
