    Extra part replacing gimbal bearing

I was replacing the gimbal bearing on my OMC cobra outdrive when I discovered an extra part. I had successfully removed and installed the new bearing, and when I went to take the old bearing off the removal tool, I noticed there was a spring like retainer clip that I can describe as what looks...

1988 4.3 OMC overheated and melted paint

Is there supposed to be a grommet in pic 7 w/ the exhaust bellows? The copper tube running through the stern? Ill have to take a closer look, I am not certain. Ill get back after, after work tonight.

1988 4.3 OMC overheated and melted paint

I got this Barr Kit. I did disconnect the raw water intake off the thermostat housing after the overheat, after waiting 1 hr., as we had another boat with us and they took the kids for spins around the pond and used my boat as the swim platform anchored just off the shore. It definitely did not...

1988 4.3 OMC overheated and melted paint

I have been trying to get a 1988 4.3 OMC Four Winns with Cobra Outdrive going. I replaced the bat wing manifolds with 2 piece set up as described by Lou C in previous posts. I performed the upgrade but then overheated almost immediately once on the water, melting the paint on the new elbows. I...

    1988 OMC 4.3 2V - Leaking Manifolds

Did you have any issues with the hoses reaching the manifold from the thermostat housing? They are coming up a bit short on mine.

    1988 OMC 4.3 2V - Leaking Manifolds

Ok, I’m moving along. Since the manifold was off I decided to pop the valve cover and take a look. Looking pretty good no signs of water getting in, feeling confident. Getting the studs out was a PIA. Generous amounts of pb blaster and heat did the job. Since the covers were off I decided...

    1988 OMC 4.3 2V - Leaking Manifolds

Good idea, I need to find the torque specs. I can’t seem to find a manual. EDIT: Scratch that some more searching I found one online. 86-98 OMC Sterndrive Manual EDIT 2: 30 ft.lb for the intake manifold on this engine, 18-22 for the exhaust for anyone that happens to come across this in a search.

    1988 OMC 4.3 2V - Leaking Manifolds

Ok, thanks! What about between the manifold and the block? I can’t seem to find that info, you wouldn’t happen to know?

    1988 OMC 4.3 2V - Leaking Manifolds

I had a mechanic over to take a look at it, there are no signs of a cracked block that we can find. It ran for a bit before noticing cracks in the tops of the manifolds and water spitting out. I'm not sure if this is a result of freezing, it seems like an odd spot to crack from freezing, up high...

    1988 OMC 4.3 2V - Leaking Manifolds

EDIT: Sorry Wrong Location, please delete. I will post in the appropriate forum! I was given a 1988 Four Winns 4.3L OMC 2V which had been sitting for a couple seasons. The owner said they winterized it thoroughly but when I got it started up water was leaking out of cracks on the manifolds both...

    Lower control cable question

It’s odd because the manual doesn’t say anything about 6 inches to the lower shift barrel but every video I’ve watched says to measure that distance. Also they say put it in forward to attach the throttle control cable, does this mean full forward or until that first notch you feel going into...

    Lower control cable question

    Lower control cable question

I did follow the manual and was in the water. So it doesn’t kill going into gear just out? I was in the water trying to get it into gear and no matter what it wouldn’t interrupt going into gear. I’m guessing I must of messed something up. I’ll try again tomorrow.

    Lower control cable question

So my boat, 1987 stingray SS, has a Merc 3.0 and was purchased last summer. I replaced the controller and upper shift and throttle control cancel but not the lower control cable. I recently took the carb off to rebuild and to the best of my ability tried to not disturb the cable settings. I...

    1986 SS Live Well question

I recently purchased a 1986 Starcraft SS 175, it appears there was a Livewell up front under the seat but I cannot for the life of me figure it out and no amount of google searching can bring up how to use it. I have confirmed there are other SS out there that have live wells so I assume that is...

Throttle stiffer going into forward - normal?

I have an 86 Stingray Supersport that I picked up relatively cheap. It has alpha one drive and I updated to quicksilver 4000 and gen 2 cables for the controls as the original control was chewed up. I have gone through the manual guide to install the cables and set them up on the switch plate...
