    winterizing merc?

The owners manual is a really good source of information. I'd post pictures of the TOC (3 pages) to show the topics covered, but I imagine that's a violation of the rules.

    winterizing merc?

I ordered an owners manual in Sept. 2020, but only the printed version was available and I think it was around $30.00 plus shipping. Need to enter one of the sets of information requested. I did it by serial number. Took about 2 weeks to get it here in NH.

Which gasket is better for impeller install, metal or fiber?

that's odd that the housing was rubbing. maybe it was an aftermarket?

Which gasket is better for impeller install, metal or fiber?

Scott06 mentioned he contacted the Merc tech line and their response was to install it dry. did you check the water tube coming from the upper unit to see if it is also deformed? (you mentioned a temp issue in post #29)

Which gasket is better for impeller install, metal or fiber?

You are welcome to have whatever perspective you want. All I'm telling you is that I bought and installed the OEM kit, which came with the metal gasket and documentation that noted in its first sentence to see the service manual for installation instructions, and then went on to describe what...

Which gasket is better for impeller install, metal or fiber?

That should clean up fine. I've only replaced mine once, so I cannot comment on the 2 grooves on the shaft. The tube that looks deformed (I don't think its supposed to look like that) is a sleeve. The part that the sleeve is connected to is the water tube coupling, and it has 2 o-rings...

Which gasket is better for impeller install, metal or fiber?

I find the combination of the operators manual, the service manual, the parts manual, and the questions/answers/discussions here are a great way to learn. The operator's manual (which I purchased from Mercury Marine last year for my 2003 power package) provides a lot information about general...

Which gasket is better for impeller install, metal or fiber?

I installed the Quicksilver 8M0100526 kit last October. The documentation that came with it (which I still have) lists Mercury 8M0100527 number too. Under Installation Instructions, the first sentence says "for complete installation instructions, refer to the appropriate Mercury Marine...

    My boat sank, part II

I read a lot here and have read a lot of your posts, but I don't post much because I don't have the knowledge or experience that so many of you do. Anyways I hope you get your engine running well again.....you certainly have the right attitude. Best of luck to you! As Roseanne Roseannadanna...

    U-Joints for 2003 Alpha One Gen 2

thanks for posting this info. I thought I would need to change a setting in my phone but couldn't find one. I usually read the threads here on my tablet or PC, but I was using my phone that time and never thought to rotate it. you learn something every day thanks!

    U-Joints for 2003 Alpha One Gen 2

thanks for doing this analysis. it seems to give more credence to the thought that the Moog 315G and other equivalent automotive u-joints were suggested as alternatives for both the 75832T1 (which is used on numerous drives back to the 70s, including both the alpha one and the earlier years of...

    U-Joints for 2003 Alpha One Gen 2

in the pics you overlaid in post #44, it looks like the caps on the upper one are a little shorter, which results in the clips being further apart as you noted. however a direct physical comparison of the two OEM u-joints will be interesting.

fair enough, I deserved that. I need to figure out how to view sigs on my phone so I can avoid this in the future.

    U-Joints for 2003 Alpha One Gen 2

Never mind. When I got on my PC I noticed your S/N info, which confirms your drive number is in that range. That info wasn't showing up on my phone earlier.

    U-Joints for 2003 Alpha One Gen 2

It is a perplexing situation. The drive units SEI currently sells have their branding on the upper but the lower doesn't seem to have any branding. SEI and Sierra make the yokes, and even the entire assembly of both yokes, center socket, and both u-joints. SEI has one yoke that they say fits...

    U-Joints for 2003 Alpha One Gen 2

First, I appreciate the discussion on this as I don't want to be posting bogus information. I see what you mean by the location of the clips. And please don't misunderstand me, I'm not trying to say you are wrong in any way. I spent way more time than I probably should have trying to figure...

    U-Joints for 2003 Alpha One Gen 2

that's interesting. I thought you had said your drive was a 95, but the part that the Sierra 18-2174 us compatible with was supposedly out of use by then. as for the automotive references, I have no problem editing my list. as I noted those part numbers had been suggested several times...

    U-Joints for 2003 Alpha One Gen 2

did you use the same measuring device on the new ones as you did for the ones that came off your drive? if not, could the calibration be off one one of them?
