Shift Cable Issues= Alpha One Gen1

I also have a 1986 140 (181cu) Mercruiser, Alpha 1 Gen 1 and did a similar project this spring (unis, bellows, gimbal bearing, shift cable, etc.) These videos were invaluable to me for navigating the lower shift cable replacement. and even though you aren't using an SEI aftermarket, this...

    New Flapper rattle at idle?

Interesting! Mine is a 1986 Mercruiser 140 (181), Alpha One Gen I. When I checked my service manual, it makes no mention of any inspection or rattle noise like this, it just goes straight to a replacement procedure.

    New Flapper rattle at idle?

Thanks folks, I've put so much work into rehabbing this boat and engine, I think I'm being a bit too picky about all the noise the engine should naturally make, thanks.

    New Flapper rattle at idle?

Ah sorry, I missed that. Yes, there is water coming out, in the same amount & velocity before the swap. I only have a single exhaust, so my understanding I only have a single flapper.

    New Flapper rattle at idle?

A very fair question. I am 95% positive I did remove the old flapper. I did a bellows job earlier and the season and I am pretty positive I remember discarding the most of old flapper. When I replaced the flapper (from the boat side), all was left was the suspension rod and the rubber ends...

    New Flapper rattle at idle?

So, I just replaced my flapper, or depending on how you look at it, installed a new one after the prior one disintegrated. :) Anyway, I've noticed a consistent rattle that seems to be coming from the exhaust pipe. I put my hand on the pipe where the flapper is and I can feel a vibration...

'87 Merc 165 3.7 runs 20 minutes dies then hard to crank

I'm still very much an amateur, so I'd get some other opinions, but I took a brief look at your service manual and it says your thermostat should be opening up at 143F, same as mine. If your temp is getting as high as 175 and the motor is quitting, sounds like it could be overheating and I'd be...

    Mercruiser 140 Carb/Fuel?

We are back baby! Confirmed I did have a blown head gasket between #2 and #3. After a head gasket replacement & valve job, #2 and #3 are back to 110 and 120 compression. Lake test later today and fine tune idle, but summer is back! Thanks all for the feedback and advice. I'll keep an eye on...

TDC0 on Merc 140, while engine in boat

Damn, that was brilliant. Wish I watched this before putting the cover back on. :)

TDC0 on Merc 140, while engine in boat

Thanks all, I ended up trying both. I couldn't get enough tension the belt to turn it, so I used the finger test and valves sound good now, thanks!

TDC0 on Merc 140, while engine in boat

I am attempting to adjust the valves after a head gasket replacement and valve job. The motor is still in the boat. I have the service manual and I understand the steps to perform the valve adjustment with the motor off. I am however having difficulty getting my mark to align with TDC0 on the...

Pop during final torque of head

No, I've read on these forums use some grease to serve the same purpose. https://forums.iboats.com/threads/sealant-on-head-bolts.55467/

    No start merc 4cyl

I did points for the first time earlier in the season, and I accidentally wired the condenser connection upside down which caused a short on the distributor breaker plate. No spark for me when that happened.

Pop during final torque of head

So, I am (was?) close to finishing a head gasket replacement and valve job on my 181cu Mercruiser 140, Alpha 1, Gen 1. On one of the head bolts, I heard a pop on the final torque. Engine block was drained days ago, block threads were chased multiple times, blown out with compressed air too...

    Mercruiser 140 Carb/Fuel?

Hmmmmm. Well, the plot thickens. Before I got to the carb, I checked the timing and it was WAY off (like 12 or 14 BTDC) and specs have it at 6. So, I adjusted the timing, reset the idle and mixture. Had a heck of time finding the sweet spot, but eventually got it. Still at idle, the RPMs...

    Mercruiser 140 Carb/Fuel?

Having a very minor issue with my 1986 Rinker with a Mercruiser 140 Alpha One Gen One, I want to address it before it becomes a major issue. It starts and performs generally well. I've noticed two things: (1) upon initial acceleration, there is a momentary hesitation before it picks up, (2) at...

Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 1 Project

Thank you. Let me say that again, THANK YOU. Just got back from a float test/joy ride with the wife after a 2 month project that included: universal joints, gimbal bearing, grease seal, bellows, shift cable, shift shaft seal, and while I was at it an impeller. Also a rewiring of the trim...

Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 1 Project

I'm still having trouble grasping how missing teeth on the retainer will push the gasket into the bellows and sink the boat. My understanding is the teeth are only there to facilitate a wrench to remove the retainer and get at the drive gear.

Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 1 Project

I presume you are concerned about #8, PN#27-35982 (for my boat here:) http://www.marineengine.com/parts/mercury_marine_parts/sn/0A571643/%2001989016/2203_60 I am not an expert so I will defer, but at least on my boat, I don't see how less teeth would make it any more likely to dislodge the...

Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 1 Project

Glad that worked for you, certainly tried, but it seems the hose provided in the kit is too stiff, and too thick to insert onto the water tube and clear the gimbal housing.
