Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

Yeah, there’s a good one pretty close to me which did the original work. But that MichiganMotorz engine isn’t too bad. If I rebuild the current one, the mechanic would be the one to do it. So it may be a wash in terms of cost since his labor is pretty expensive. The block may have to be rebored...

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

Well, mechanic took it apart. The crankshaft bearing surface is ruined. It would have to be turned down and oversize bearings installed. Also, one of the rings on cylinder 4 scored the wall. So I am back to square one. It could probably be rebuilt again, but at this point I just want a boat that...

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

Well, I had a boat mechanic take a look and it took a while due to his schedule, but he figured out the problem. 4/8 of the lifters are extremely worn. 2 of them even have holes in the bottom. This is probably my fault due to not lubricating everything properly on startup. I did add a ZDDP...

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

By gas, I should clarify I don’t mean gasoline. But I mean gas like combustion gas.

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

It definitely has something coming out 😞. You can see it in the second video in my first post.

The line that runs from the top of the valve cover over to the intake. To feed crankcase gasses back into the combustion chamber.

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

The oil level is a little high. I haven’t thought much of it until now. And I’m using a friction modifier to increase the zinc content. Is it possible that the lifters are collapsing because of the oil aeration? I wouldn’t think that would cause such low power though.

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

Definitely possible. Compression was 150 on all 4 when I checked it a few weeks ago. I do see a fair amount of gas coming through the valve cover vent hose though. I’m not sure what’s normal. It will be really disappointing if I have to sell a non-working boat 😞

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

#2 and #4 looked about the same but #3 looks fouled. Not sure if these will attach in order, but #3 is obvious.

This is #1 cylinder. I’ll look at the rest too.

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

Tried the external tank. Same thing still. I used fresh 90 octane no ethanol gas with a brand new fuel line and it’s pretty much the same. I suppose it could be timing, but I counted the teeth in that photo and it really seems like the marks would line up if the crank was rotated 360°. I’ll...

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

I’ll try this if the external tank doesn’t work. Thanks for the procedure.

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

Thanks for the manual. The only way to check the timing gears is to take the engine out of the boat, right? It will rev in neutral, but it just doesn’t have power to get on plane. I’ll try the external fuel tank next unless anyone has any more ideas.

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

This is the best photo I have of the cam and crank gear. I have been trying to count the teeth to figure out if it's one tooth off, but I can't quite tell. I suppose that could cause the problem, and is a likely culprit since I'm the one that put it together.

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

At the time, I was pretty certain I was doing it right. The only picture I have, the cam and crank are 180° off so it’s hard to tell if it’s right on the money. Mine has timing gears that mesh together and no timing chain. I lined up the two marks on the gears. It’s definitely possible that I...

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

Alright, I just checked the timing and it is actually a little retarded. It was 0° at tdc at idle. I also checked the advance and it does advance. I didn’t check any higher than 3000 rpm but it seems to top out around 12:00-12:30 on the main pulley. I’ll try and figure out what that angle is.

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

Alright, I replaced the distributor cap with a quicksilver one and replaced the fuel pump with a Sierra one and there is no change. I will try running off of an external tank next. This boat ran great when I got it (aside from spewing oil out the dipstick). I didn’t touch the fuel tank at all...

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

Well said, will do. I haven't run it very much because I've been too afraid I'll damage something. I'm glad you feel the same. Dubs283: Will do I'll verify the dwell. I think there's a way I can do it with my multimeter measuring frequency or pwm percentage. Otherwise, I'll just get a real...

Rebuilt Mercruiser 140/3.0 doesn’t have enough power to plane

TL;DR: Rebuilt mercruiser 140, idles great but doesn’t have enough power to plane. Going to replace fuel pump, and rotor cap. Anything I’m not thinking of? Numbers: Engine: mercruiser 3.0 - 4779114 Carburetor: Rochester 2GC - 7043184 074 7 1 Outdrive: I think it was a pre alpha or early...
