    No joy on 1969 Evinrude

I try it choked and open. Solenoid works great.

    No joy on 1969 Evinrude

Things I've tried today: - Cut and resoldered frayed plug wires to threaded contacts on distributor end - Cleaned contacts on stator - Cleaned contacts on distributor cap - Cleaned and set points (they appeared correct already) - Opened all four carb drain screws and verified gas present -...

    No joy on 1969 Evinrude

Unfortunately, I don't have a portable tank. Do you think it's gas if I don't even get a sneeze on starting fluid?

    No joy on 1969 Evinrude

Thanks! I appreciate this a lot. However, in reading it I suspect my understanding and experience are not sufficient to work through it. This is quite frustrating. All the work I had done was in an effort to get the boat sold. I love the boat but it doesn't fit our family anymore. I had it...

Just to reiterate - I am definitely a novice at this. :) See if this video holds the answer: https://photos.app.goo.gl/WuTAzxHAbVinVq648

    No joy on 1969 Evinrude

Working on a whole list of suggestions right now. I have cylinder one at TDC. Where do I look for timing marks?

Got it. I don't know a lot about engines so I don't know about spark testers. I'll look into that. (I thought you were suggesting I pull the wire off and hold a lead 3/8 off the top of the spark plug. I know you can't gap a spark plug 3/8!)

    At the plug you mean?

Haven't checked the coil lately but I do get a spark on all cylinders.

    No joy on 1969 Evinrude

Here's my summer puzzler. Working on a 1969 Evinrude 85 hp model 85993E. Can't get it to run. I have strong spark on all plugs. Battery is fully charged and it turns strong. Fuel is good and making it to the cylinders. Compression is good. Flywheel key is not broken. I set and cleaned the...

    Replacing trim motor

Thanks for the reply! If I'm understanding you correctly I'm going to need to support the motor's weight while I do this, correct?

    Replacing trim motor

I have a 1989 Stratos 179V with a Mercury Mariner Magnum 150 hp that has a dead trim motor. The hidden screw looks to be inaccessible without lifting the motor and removing the bracket from the transom. Does anyone have a trick that would help me avoid that? I'm not looking forward to that...

    1969 Evinrude 85HP - No spark

Yeah... My trouble was keeping the flywheel from spinning so I could turn the nut against it.

    1969 Evinrude 85HP - No spark

Cool. I'm wiping and blowing it out as well as possible. If I'm understanding the points correctly, I want to set them so they are 0.010 at the high point in the cam, meaning that is the maximum that they open. Is that correct?

    1969 Evinrude 85HP - No spark

Ok. I'm in! Overall I think things look fairly clean, though I have zero experience. :) The only exception is the points and wires. They were covered with something that looked like graphite. I think I got it cleaned up pretty well. The point on the right was probably at 0.006 or 0.007. The...

What is the trick to keep the flywheel from spinning to get the nut off?

    1969 Evinrude 85HP - No spark

For sure. I have seen the 100-105 ft/lb rating. I remember the previous owner saying the flywheel was finicky and that he had to take it to someone. I just wanted to make sure that a conventional/inexpensive torque wrench would do the trick and that I don't need to take it to someone with...

    1969 Evinrude 85HP - No spark

Thanks! A couple follow ups... Is a click type torque wrench accurate enough? What should I use to clean the rotor and cap? Just a rag or a specific type of solvent? Anything else I will need on hand to do what you've described?

    1969 Evinrude 85HP - No spark

Started having engine trouble this year. If I'm checking it right, there's no spark on any of the plugs. Not sure what to do next. So far no dice finding someone willing to look at an engine this old. I'm handy, but know almost nothing about engines. Is this something I should bother trying to...
