    Also there is a kill switch linked to the plugs done by a previous owner and sometimes when turned to make to break it does not kill the engine it just drops on revs on idle

    Also using premium unleaded fuel with 50-1 mix on castrol outboard 2t oil

    Also new spark plugs installed and checked fuel is getting to both plugs

    80 psi on both cylinders spark checked with spark plug tester

We have a 20 hp 1973 long shaft outboard, currently on our weston 670 22 ft give or take, Currently on a calm river the maximum speed we can get at high revs is approx 7-8mph, and it seems very unresponsive when throttling forward, however in reverse it goes nuts...

    Well its a timing issue so why not try a new key my johnson 20hp flywheel does not have a gap that large or the movement that he seems to have

    I still think the woodruff key is not meeting the flywheel properly on this image I can see a gap between the flywheel to the key

    He said it was running fine and hasn't changed wiring as far as we know so would that be an issue ?

    To me I cannot see the key engaging with the flywheel with the pictures shown so yes I would change that first off

    100% the key now I've seen this your flywheel isn't engaged with the key at the top of the crank

    Pitting at the top of the crank and is this top part of this a part of the key look at the picture of your flywheel you have a misshapen sharp point

    I'm sure its not he needs to send a picture of the flywheel in place located to the key to see if it makes contact

    Ok so can you take out the key does the bit from the top of the crank that is flush with the crank also come out
