    Frozen Block?

For anyone who cares, we got the 3.0L engine running today and it ran up to 4000 rpm but isn't idling great. Tomorrow.. new points, plugs, condenser, distrib. cap and adjust the idle mixture. Ran out of time today.. but very promising. All the gauges work. Got oil pressure, good water temp...

    Frozen Block?

I have one side 'triangle' piece, one front panel and one busted triangle piece.. so pretty much looking for a whole unit. !st local salvage guy had one that was close, but too big. He had a rack of Bayliner windshields, which, he said were his real money-makers.. up to $375 per panel! yikes...

    Frozen Block?

OK.. I do have a couple pieces of the original windshield, so I'll look.. Other than that, I doubt I can find a manual for this '88 Marlin.. but thanks for the info.

    Frozen Block?

Taylor Glass number..? ok.. how do I figure that out?.. Interesting.. Is this an industry 'standard' and are all.. or most.. boat salvagers familiar with this # ? I actually found another 'local' Salvage place that looks promising. We're going tomorrow.. Fingers crossed. (Pics of generic...

    Frozen Block?

Yeah the 4 Winns had bad center floor boards. I was just going to screw a sheet pf plywood on top for a cheap way to get on the water, (It's upholstery was chewed by critters also).. (I got the 4 Winns because the engine 'LOOKED' so nice.. lol.. all rod bearings were spun and the core plug...

    Frozen Block?

Yes, I originally called it a core plug.. and it was pressure tested.. so maybe I did hit the lottery.. but the location of this plug.. very high up.. really baffles me as to how it could 'freeze' out. Anyway.. I set this block aside for my next 3.0 build. I got a decent short block from...

    1988 Marlin needs windshield

Our 2nd boat in 3 months.. 1988 16' Marlin Bowrider.. (We quit working on the 16' Four Winns, [w/ bad upholstery]), when we spotted this Marlin with good upholstery for free).. We cobbled together the one good short block w/ an overhauled head and the good stuff off 2 1/2 3.0L engines...

    Frozen Block?

I bought a 1987 Four Winns 16' bowrider fixer-upper (cheap) wanting to get back on the water (after 30 years), and knew the engine had probs, but being a decent mechanic, (albeit not familiar w/ marine engines), I thought I'd have a go.. The engine did show some traces of water in the oil, but...

    3.0L Manifold; Studs or Bolts?

Charlie, Yours must be after '91..? (square ports and 5 bolts).. I'm working on a '87 and an '85 and the one I found has.. sure enough 4 bolts and 2 studs. Pre '91. Still hoping to figure out why studs and where.. and why did they eliminate the one hole / bolt? Anyway.. thanks.. JG

    3.0L Manifold; Studs or Bolts?

How much was it and where'd you buy yours? Thanks..JG

    3.0L Manifold; Studs or Bolts?

OK.. I screwed up.. The manifold 'studs' are not at the rear of the ('85), cylinder head, but at the front 2 positions.. I went back and located some pics.. Still baffles me tho' why they're there and not bolts.. and why there's only 5 bolts on the '87. Interestingly the '85 has side...

    3.0L Manifold; Studs or Bolts?

Howdy.. New to marine engines but I'm a good mechanic.. (lol).. Just got an '87 4 Winns 'junk' boat and a spare motor.. (again..lol).. anyway.. My first 3.0L seized, so we took it apart.. spun rod bearings.. got a 1985 spare engine.. low hours but sat for 30 years.. took it down to the...

    1987 3.0L water in oil

Gave that a passing thought.. Really don't want to go thru disposing the boat.. and concerned about the late ignition wiring, harness and all, changing years like that. I don't know enough to mess with that.. BUT.. If I had seen a deal like that anywhere, I'd be tempted. I also don't want...

    1987 3.0L water in oil

Bondo.. Thanks.. and Pmt133, I got into this rough '87 Four Wins 160, on a lark to get back on the water after about 30 yrs, and paid a whopping $400 w/ trailer, hoping to spruce it up for another ? $2000 tops.. so much for that idea.. lol.. (I've been telling my friends, (when they...

    1987 3.0L water in oil

Toward front of engine ?. or rear?.. Now that's the kind of info I'm looking for.. Thank you.. I'll go to the engine shop and look for myself. If I find it, I can take it home (and scrap it), and save myself $300.. Thank you very much. JG

    1987 3.0L water in oil

Cyclops, the engine is all apart (and all the other core plugs are still solid like new), and judging by the lack of other plugs being out, and no external block cracks anywhere, I'm willing to believe if this thing did 'freeze' it wasn't a 'hard' freeze.. Like my GM 350 in my '78 Silverado did...

    1987 3.0L water in oil

A "Thermal Declination material breech".. now THERE'S a $20 phrase.. sounds awful.. lol.. you mean the SOB froze..? Yeah I'm coming to that conclusion. The thought of trying to find a decent (un-frozen) motor will be tricky. The $1000 question is.. Is it possible for the rear 2" core...

    1987 3.0L water in oil

2004 SeaRay: I agree and that's were I'm leaning. Block in the shop, and actually I may have found a guy who can sell me a block or core engine, (with crack guarantee, of course). and ScottinAZ: Forgive me but that still confuses me. As I outlined in my last post, If I am seeing all this...

    1987 3.0L water in oil

Radiator?? I'm also trying to understand if the manifold is cracked, (It contains only water, intake gasses and exhaust), how would water leaking thru a crack in manifold get in to the oil? The only places it could go is to the exhaust ports, (which would blow it all out the back), or to the...
