    TILT / Trim

my 40 just has one piston, i think they used that design up to the 75. Is it not trimming under load for you?

    Testing thermostat with torch

don't heat engine parts with a torch or a heat gun! They are not designed for this abuse.

    Testing thermostat with torch

You'll overheat and destroy it. Also this doesn't really confirm anything. You want to ensure it opens at the correct temperature. Maybe it doesn't open at the correct temperature, but it does open at inferno.

    25hp Evinrude

Simplest thing to check when an engine runs for a bit then dies is the fuel pump. Squeeze the fuel ball to keep the carburetor filled, if it doesn't die you probably have a fuel pump issue. Also you can disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor and crank the engine over, you should get...

    1981 Mercury 7.5 2 stroke

A slight leak in a crank seal doesn't usually damage these smaller outboards. The scoring is probably caused by being started up cold and run straight to full throttle without a warmup. Have you run this thing under load to see how it actually performs?? You can only see a small percentage of...

    1981 Mercury 7.5 2 stroke

Light scratching on a 2 stroke isn't really a big deal. Poke a toothpick or something soft in there and see if you can feel them, if not they probably aren't an issue. It's a wonder what fresh gas and a WOT run up and down the lake can do for an old motor, they live to be used. It sounds like...

    1981 Mercury 7.5 2 stroke

How do the cylinders look? You should be able to see them through the bypass cover as well. In all likelyhood the engine will run with 75psi of compression; give it a try and see how it does. If it's been sitting for a long time it might just have some sticky spots in the ring grooves and it'll...

    !/2 ton Truck towing limitations

You could set up a 5000lbs trailer with 10lbs of tongue weight, but you'd jacknife and crash the first time you took a corner down a hill. The assumption being made by ford is that the trailer mfg has specified correct weight and balance of the trailer, which is going to be around 10% tongue...

    Yamaha cavitation plate repair

Many yards have welders they use, call around and see if they can reference you to a welder; it might be cheaper than you expect. Also I don't know what you were planning to use as replacement material, but you DO NOT want 6061 or 6063, it will corrode in marine use and if it's welded to cast...

1981 Evinrude 35hp tiller conversion kit?

the casting between the mid section and the clamp bracket is different; you should be able to find a cheap engine with a broken lower unit, blown power head, etc. really cheap. Take the tiller specific parts and put it on your motor. Not really a huge deal honestly, just finding the parts is the...

How long is the skeg on a mariner 30/40

I put less heat into the gear case than sitting outside on a hot day. With a thermal gun I measured 90F at the gear case.

How long is the skeg on a mariner 30/40

I didn't pull any gear case vents; I put a wet rag over the gear case and welded an inch, then let it cool for 10 minutes, and welded another inch. In between these passes the rag didn't even start steaming, stayed cool as a cucumber. I'm sure it gets hotter sitting outside in the summer...

How long is the skeg on a mariner 30/40

Well, it's not perfect, but as some schmuck who learned to weld by watching youtube videos i'm pretty happy with the result

How long is the skeg on a mariner 30/40

it's a mercury mariner, the roundy one with oil injection that's painted an awful grey colour.

    1979 Mercury outboard

Your best bet is probably to find a complete used engine, i'm sure if you buy just a block you'll be missing a ton of brackets and linkages that will be difficult/expensive to find on their own.

How long is the skeg on a mariner 30/40

I have bought a boat with a 1996 mariner 30 that has a damaged skeg. I straightened it out and plan to weld on a replacement cast aluminum skeg with 5356 but I have one problem... How long is this supposed to be? I'm assuming maybe 1/2" or so below the prop? Any help would be great, thanks!

    25hp Evinrude

The wiring is really simple on these, not a big deal to fix. If it has good compression and it's cheap I'd take the gamble. Sitting that long you may have to replace upper and lower crank seals, but that's not hard if it isn't all rusty. Water pump is a must.

    Need to reduce ventilation

Thanks! I found a PTT unit on marketplate for $200 (that needed a coupler... weird story), anyway doing the conversion from manual trim to PTT was fantastic. Cupping makes sense, I'm gonna have to take what you said about the blade angle of attack and sit down and look at the thing real close...

    Need to reduce ventilation

How does rake actually cause bow lift? I'm not doubting that it does, I'm just failing to understand it.

    Need to reduce ventilation

I have mounted the motor so the A/V plate juuust skims the surface and doesn't throw a wave on a plane. It is my understanding this is the correct way to mount an engine. With the only change being the propeller I now need significantly less trim for the same amount of bow lift, have better...
