    Starter getting only 4 volts

Which cables do you mean? When you say lug and insulation, I assume you mean the ground cable from the battery? Would that affect it if I’m going straight from the battery to the starter? I’m bypassing the main ground cable. Thank you for your response. I’m so lost here.

    Starter getting only 4 volts

I have an 85 HP Force outboard. The starter is relatively new, and the battery is brand new. I went to start it after about two weeks, and it struggled to crank over. I took the starter out and had it tested. Disconnected from the boat, it works flawlessly. The battery itself reads at 12.5...

Shift Linkage - Johnson Seahorse 9 1/2 HP

Thank you guys for the wisdom! The shift lever adjusting screw was just loose. I positioned the lever and tightened that thing down. It now shifts decisively and doesn’t flop around anymore.

Shift Linkage - Johnson Seahorse 9 1/2 HP

I picked this motor up the other day, and it runs strong, but has some shifting issues. I put it into forward and I could still jiggle the lever up and down. Neutral was hard to find. I got it into reverse for a couple of seconds, but it popped out. Under the cowling, all I can see is that the...

Outboard ran without water for about five minutes

I appreciate your candor here. The incident had me feeling sick for the exact reasons you described. My earmuffs don’t quite fit or stay on this thing, so I resorted to a big storage bin until this happened. I have my eyes peeled for a sturdier container. Amazon got the new impeller to me in...

Outboard ran without water for about five minutes

Okay I switched the attachment on the gauge and they all three read 120. The universe is giving me grace.

Outboard ran without water for about five minutes

I put my 85 Force outboard in a big bin of water and fired it up, then started some other tasks while it idled. About three minutes later, it died. I thought nothing of it, and started it again. A few seconds later, it died, and I started it again. Then I climbed out of the boat and realized...

Bilge Pump Replacement - 1988 Bayliner Capri

This is a huge relief, thank you! So it’s also not likely that I went to far and compromised the hull? Very cool that you put your experience toward community service.

    85 HP Force Trim/Tilt Inconsistent

Yeah I’m not sure who thought that was a good idea to install, but I’ve got the right one in there now. Phew.

Bilge Pump Replacement - 1988 Bayliner Capri

I am worried that I abused my bilge pump “pad” when I put screws in it. As you can rightly guess, I am a rookie at all of this. The old pump was shot, so I wired in a new one with the float switch in it. It was a serious ordeal to reach back there, using a mirror to see what I was doing. I...
